(INDEPENDENCE, Mo.) Monday, March 31, 2014 - The City of Independence Fire Department has issued a burn ban effective immediately, continuing until further notice.
The ban is for all outdoor or open burning permits and is a result of reports from the National Weather Service indicating potentially high risk due to elevated winds (15-20 mph), low humidity and the dry, combustible condition of foliage for the coming week. A significant number of incidents occurred over the weekend, increasing the danger to the citizens and property in Independence.
Elevated Fire Danger Forecasts will continue to be monitored by the Independence Fire Department and Emergency Preparedness Division. The Rangeland Fire Danger Forecast by the National Weather Service will be evaluated and Fire Chief Sandra Schiess will make a determination for lifting or maintaining the ban.
While barbeque grills are not part of this ban, residents are cautioned to use extreme care when using these in proximity to combustible material such as wooden decks, and to dispose of burning materials only after ensuring they are completely extinguished.
For further information about the current outdoor burn ban, citizens may contact the Fire Prevention Division of the Independence Fire Department at 816-325-7121 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
