Celebrate National Public Health Week

(INDEPENDENCE, Mo.) Thursday, April 3, 2014 – The City of Independence Health Department will host events April 7-11 for National Public Health Week (NPHW). Health Director Larry Jones said the events aim to raise awareness of the critical role public health and prevention plays in keeping communities healthy and empowering people to participate in controlling their health outcomes.

Beginning Monday, April 7, the Health Department will be reaching out into the community with events and activities to raise awareness of public health and its impact on the health of our residents.

“Each day focuses on developing new ways to show that public health touches every aspect of daily life,” Jones said. “Being at each event gets you registered to win a year membership to the Sermon Center and a FitBit activity tracker.”

The events are:

· Monday, April 7, 2014: Be Healthy from the Start: Welcome to the Public Health Life! Public Health practice starts at the beginning of life. “Like” the Health Department on social media and get geared up for a week of public health events. Attend the Gardening class from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Health Department, 515 S. Liberty Street, Independence, MO 64050.

· Tuesday, April 8, 2014: Don’t Panic: Planning for the worst times begins by planning during the good times for a Public Health Life. Come by the Health Department from 2 to 4 p.m. and see what we are doing to get Independence prepared for an emergency.

· Wednesday, April 9, 2014: Get Out Ahead: The Public Health Life is about making the right choices early to defend your life and prevent poor health. Walk a one-mile course with us starting at 9 a.m. at the Health Department.

· Thursday, April 10, 2014: Eat Well: Choosing healthy options is the way of the Public Health Life. Attend food demonstrations from 2 to 4 p.m. at the 7-11 located at 201 East U.S. Hwy. 24, Independence, MO 64050.

· Friday, April 11, 2014: Be the Healthiest Nation in One Generation: Become a believer in the Public Health Life and change the future of Independence. Celebrate the public health lifestyle and the end of NPHW 2014 as one registered participant wins a one-year membership to the Sermon Center and a FitBit activity tracker. Winner will be notified at a later time; does not have to be present to win.

“The Health Department wants to improve the health and wellness of Independence by empowering our residents to lead a public health life,” Jones said. “I want to encourage everyone to participate in our events during NPHW to learn just how to accomplish that goal.”
