October Activities and Classes at The Palmer Center

(INDEPENDENCE, Mo.) Friday, September 20, 2013 – The Palmer Center at 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO is operated by the City of Independence and is dedicated to the mission of improving the overall health of adults 50+. Java Joe Coffee Bar
Adults 50+ are invited to sample specialty gourmet coffee on our patio (weather permitting). Coffee is served at 10:30 a.m. on Thursdays, October 3 and October 17 at The Palmer Center located at 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO.

AARP Defensive Driving Course
Adults 50+ are invited to tune up your driving skills and update your knowledge of the rules of the road, learn defensive driving technique, and other important driving skills. Session will be 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, November 2 at The Palmer Center, 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO. Pre-registration is required by October 19, with payment due to the instructor on the day of the class. Cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members. Co-sponsored with AARP. Staying Sharp: Aging Wisely (Brain Health)
AARP will be presenting this informative topic to all adults 50+. This topic will cover information on focus attention, increased brain speed, improved memory, enhanced cognitive skills, and much more. Presentation will be 10 a.m. Monday, October 21 at The Palmer Center, 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO. If you have any questions, please call 325-6200.

Balance for Life – Educational Series
Adults 50+ are invited to an educational series. "What is Continence and How to Preserve It" will be presented at 10:45 a.m. on Wednesday, October 16. Presented by occupational & physical therapists from Rehab Choice at The Groves. Additional questions may be directed to 325-6200.

Project Strength – Healthy Lifestyle on a Budget
It’s not easy to stretch food resources to meet nutritional needs, but you will learn exactly how to do that. A different topic will be discussed each week, hands-on preparation of a recipe will be expected of all and tastings will be provided. You will receive a sack of food items to take home at the end of each class. Participants are required to commit to attend all eight weeks of classes, stay for the entire duration of each class, and first time to participate. There are limited spots for repeat participants. Registration deadline is Friday, September 27. Program will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Fridays, October 4 through November 22 (8 weeks), at The Palmer Center located at 218A N. Senior Information Fair
Adults 50+ are invited to visit more than 40 vendors to receive information for items and services. Enjoy complimentary health screenings, free refreshments, and enter in a drawing for prizes. This event is scheduled for 9 to noon on Friday, October 18.

Autumn Adventure
Adults 50+ are invited to join Parks and Recreation on an Autumn Adventure day tour to visit Miller’s Pecan Farm in DeWitt, MO. Enjoy their warm welcome, complimentary treats, learn how pecans are harvested, sample various pecans and stock up for holiday baking. Lunch will be provided at a local restaurant followed by a stop at Peter’s Market for apples and fruit for your pies. The tour is scheduled for Thursday, October 24. The deadline to pre-register is Thursday, October 3, and the cost is $51. Please call 325-6200 to register as soon as possible or for more information.

Halloween Costume Contest
The Palmer Center will be hosting a Halloween Costume Contest beginning at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 31. Prizes will be awarded. The Palmer Center is located at 218A N. 5-A-Day Bingo
The Palmer Center will host 5-A-Day Bingo at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, October 1. Fruits and vegetables are contributed by Hy-Vee on 23rd Street to use as prizes during this nutrition-education bingo game. Red Hat Pokeno
Join other Red Hat members in this fun game. Don’t forget to bring pennies for your markers! This event is scheduled at 12:30 p.m., Thursday, October 10 at The Palmer Center located at 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence.

Intermediate Senior Tap Dance
Have you always loved watching a tap dancer? Listen as your feet rhythmically strike the floor to the tunes in this intermediate tap dance class and experience a whole new way to have fun! Please bring your own tap shoes. The next Intermediate Senior Tap Dance class will start on Wednesday, September 4. The class will meet for four weeks at 11 a.m. Pre-registration is required; the fee is $20. Call 325-6200 to register at least three days in advance or if you have any questions. Diabetic Foot Screenings, Blood Sugar and Blood Pressure Checks
Adults 50+ may come to The Palmer Center from 10 to 11:15 a.m. on Wednesday, October 2 for diabetic foot screenings, blood sugar and blood pressure checks performed by St. Mary’s Medical Center staff. The Palmer Center is located at 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO. For more information call 325-6200.

Blood Pressure
Adults 50+ may come to The Palmer Center to have their blood pressure checked from 10:30 to 11:30 am on Wednesday, October 9 by Dr. John Chapman, and 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 15 by the Visiting Nurses Association. Health Education and You
Adults 50+ are invited to a free Health Presentation from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 10 at The Palmer Center. This month’s topic is "Strokes." Cover to Cover
The Palmer Center’s book club "Cover to Cover" will meet at 2 p.m. on Thursday, October 17, at the Truman Memorial Building. October’s book is "Plain Truth" by Jodi Picoult. The Write Place Poetry Society
Adults 50+ are invited to read their individual poetry writings or reflect upon the work of others during the next Write Place Poetry Society meeting to be held at The Palmer Center at 3 p.m. Thursday, October 17. White Elephant Bingo

Skillbuilders
Widows, widowers, and caregivers can enjoy complimentary pastries and e by having their special day at The Palmer Center, 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO. Tagilima Crafts
Adults 50+ are welcome to join others for a time of crafts and socializing from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. every Thursday at The Palmer Center. The Palmer Center is located at 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO. For more information call 325-6200.

Vital Volunteer Program
The Palmer Center is currently accepting applications for volunteers who would like to teach a special skill to older adults or be a general program leader. Please call 325-6200 to request an application.

Palmer Center Fitness Center Memberships
Adults 50+ are invited to tour The Palmer Center Fitness Room and consider joining as a member for a nominal annual fee. The Fitness Room includes several cardiovascular and weight-training machines. Each new member will complete a fitness assessment and receive an orientation to the equipment. Call 325-6200 for more information about becoming a member.
