Independence Named Tree City USA
April 19, 2013

For the 13th time, Independence, MO has been named a Tree City USA and Tree Line USA community by the Arbor Day Foundation. Tree City USA is sponsored in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service and recognizes communities that have proven their commitment to an effective, ongoing community forestry program.

Independence will be recognized at the annual Arbor Day Celebration held in collaboration with the “Farmers Market” sponsored by the merchants of the Independence Square at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 4. This is a free event.

Free tree seedlings will be available while supplies last for those in attendance. Information on trees and tree care will also be provided. There will be a drawing for several five-gallon container trees courtesy of Independence Power & Light (IPL) and Independence Parks and Recreation.

Andrew Dodson, IPL Tree Superintendent said, “We are proud to be recognized for ‘Tree Line USA’ for the 13th year! Our tree program is twofold: First, our professional tree contractor trims and removes trees to provide reliable electric service to our customers. We also provide our customer with education information on tree replacement and tree planting. We have also maintained a 90% satisfaction rating with our customers as a result of the tree trimming.”

Independence met four standards to become a Tree City USA community by having: a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program, and an Arbor Day observance. Requirements were also met for IPL’s Tree Line USA award.
