INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – Following a nation-wide search, City Manager Zach Walker today announced Doug Short was selected as the next Fire Chief for the Independence Fire Department. Short, currently a Deputy Fire Chief with the department, will assume the position on December 26 following the retirement of Chief John Greene. He will work closely with Greene over the next month to transition into the position.
“It’s an honor to take this position, work with the fire fighters of this great department and to continue the forward momentum of this organization,” Short said. “I will put forth all effort to help grow this fire department through leadership, education and service to one that everyone can be proud of, respect and recognize as one of the best departments within the greater metro area. I have spent 30 years in the fire service and enjoyed every minute of serving as the public and I look forward to my continued service to the City of Independence.”
Deputy Chief Short has been with the department since 2012. He started as a Battalion Chief of Prevention. This includes fire prevention activities, fire code enforcement, and fire investigations. Short was promoted to Deputy Chief of Administration in 2014. In this role he has been responsible for developing and managing the department budget, as well as overseeing the Prevention, Training and Services Divisions. As a member of the command team for Fire Operations he has served as acting chief in Chief Greene’s absence.
“The Fire Chief is a critical part of our leadership team,” City Manager Zach Walker said. “In filling this position, I sought input from both our Fire command staff as well as our union leadership. It was very clear from all stakeholders that the Chief needed to be a visionary leader capable of guiding the Fire Department into the next chapter of its long and storied history while also continuing to incorporate the department into our collective goals as outlined in the City’s Strategic Plan, Independence for All. After assessing our highly qualified candidates through a rigorous, multi-faceted evaluation process, it is clear Deputy Chief Short possesses the necessary attributes to successfully lead the Independence Fire Department. I could not be prouder or more confident in Chief Short as he embarks on this new opportunity.”
Prior to Independence, Short served as Fire Chief for the West Peculiar Fire Protection District in Peculiar, Mo., from 2005 to 2012. He started his career in the Fort Osage Fire Protection District working his way up from firefighter/paramedic to Division Chief of Training between 1992 and 2002. Short served as a Vocational Education Instructor for the Fort Osage School District from 2002-2005 and was named Career and Technology Center Teacher of the Year in 2004.
Short received his Bachelors of Public Administration in Fire Service Management from Park University and is currently working toward his Masters of Education in Adult and Organizational Learning.
