Oh Christmas Tree – Mayor’s Christmas Tree finds new home thanks to Independence citizen

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – The City of Independence today planted the Mayor’s Christmas Tree at Hiram Young Park. The 20 foot tall Colorado Blue Spruce was donated by Gerald Scranton, an Independence resident.

“We are excited to continue this long standing tradition with a new twist, and it means so much to us that a citizen offered his own tree to help get things started,” Mayor Eileen Weir said. “We will not only have the Christmas tree but other photo opportunities available at Hiram Young Park, leading citizens into our historic downtown for the holidays.”

“This tradition means a lot to me and my family,” Gerald Scranton said. “I’m proud to give this tree to the City so it will be enjoyed by more people for generations to come.”

The Mayor’s Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony will take place on December 1. Citizens will see work in the park leading up to the ceremony including new sidewalks and additional trees. Information on the ceremony and other holiday activities will be included in the November CityScene and on Facebook at Facebook.com/cityofindependence.
