The Palmer Center is a facility that is dedicated to the mission of improving the overall health of 50+ adults in the community. This community focal point for Independence is a place where one can find the resources needed to live a vital and healthy lifestyle.

The Center offers nutritious lunches, social events, holiday gatherings, fitness opportunities, educational and leisure activities, escorted tours, volunteer opportunities and many valuable services for older adults. The facility has an outdoor patio, a welcome center, gymnasium, fitness room, meeting space, game & craft room, library, computer lab, the Catherine J.A. Curtis Dining Hall, and a full service kitchen. Rental space is available for special events.

We are happy to provide SilverSneakers —the nation's largest older adult fitness program— available through select Medicare Advantage health plans. To determine if you are eligible for SilverSneakers, check your Health Plan by calling the number on the back of your insurance card, go to, call SilverSneakers at 1-888-423-4632 or stop by the front desk of The Palmer Center to verify your eligibility.

By getting your SilverSneakers membership, you will be able to participate in SilverSneakers classes and join The Palmer Center & Roger T. Sermon Community Center fitness rooms at no charge, unless your particular plan has a small optional supplemental benefit fee (check with your plan).  Classes are held at the Truman Memorial Building.

SilverSneakers Classic

When:Tuesdays/Thursdays at 10:00 a.m.

Where:  Truman Memorial Building  

Instructors:  Kelly Cook/Dana Blum 

Cost:  Free for SilverSneakers members/ $2 for non-members

Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement and activities for daily living.  Hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles and a SilverSneakers ball are offered for resistance.  A chair is available if needed for seated or standing support.                                                  

SilverSneakers Circuit

When: Wednesdays at 12 p.m.

Where:  Truman Memorial Building

Instructors:  Kelly Cook

Cost:  Free for SilverSneakers members/ $2 for non-members

 Combine fun with fitness to increase your cardiovascular and muscular endurance power with a standing circuit workout. Upper-body strength work with hand-held weights, elastic  tubing with handles, and a SilverSneakers ball is alternated with low-impact aerobic choreography. A chair is used for standing support, stretching and  relaxation exercises.                   

SilverSneakers Yoga   

When: Mondays at 10 a.m. and Wednesdays at 1:15 p.m.

Where:  Truman Memorial Building  

Instructors:  Kelly Cook/Margaret French 

Cost:  Free for SilverSneakers members/ $2 for non-members

Improve joint range of movement, strength and balance- and relax! Learn safe moves and  breathing exercises to reduce stress and mental anxiety.  


Welcome Center

The welcome center includes the front office with staff dedicated to providing an exceptional senior center for your use. This is where you may find general information regarding programs, register for classes, and express your concern to staff. Comfortable seating and a complimentary coffee are available.

Outdoor Patio

The outdoor patio, which stretches along the front of the building provides seating for you to enjoy fresh air, in a historical surrounding and participate in planned outdoor activities.

This 6,956-square-foot gymnasium is ideal for special events and athletic programs . Features include an adjacent concession stand with counter space and a commercial sized refrigerator to provide concessions as well as a marked walking track around the perimeter of the gym. Rental is available.

Fitness Room Memberships

The Palmer Center has a fitness room for 50+ adults to pursue their individual fitness goals. Included are Nu-Steps, Treadmills, an elliptical trainer, a recumbent bike, and six Nautilus Nitro weight training machines. Each membership requires an orientation to the equipment by our trainer. Fee: An annual membership is $50 for Independence residents, $65 for non-residents.

Game/Craft Room

Engage in a healthy diversion of an assortment of friendly game opportunities and classes to explore your creative abilities. This room can be divided with a movable partitioned wall or expand up to 1,400 square feet. Be looking for billiards, board games, bingo, card games, art classes and more.

Computer Lab

Computer tutoring and computers with internet access are available for use.

Low Vision Resource Area

If you experience problems with low vision, plan a visit to utilize or perhaps borrow some of our equipment: A Merlin - a full color auto focus video magnifier system, a variety of magnifiers, check writing guides and 20/20 pens.

The Palmer Center Advisory Council

The Palmer Advisory Council meets monthly to discuss issues related to The Palmer Center and 50+ Parks and Recreation programs. Please contact The Palmer Center office at (816) 325-6200 for more information.

Need for Volunteers & Instructors

Do you have a talent or skill you would like to share with others? We are looking for instructors and volunteers to teach new classes and host activities. Class topics include: crafts, art, computer, educational, health, fun and games, fitness, inter-generational, etc. Volunteers are also needed to package home delivered meals and serve meals at the daily nutrition site.
