Pursuit of assault suspect and injured victim leads to injury accident
Today just after 2 pm Lee’s Summit PD transferred a call to Independence PD regarding an assault in-progress. The female victim was the passenger in a vehicle that was traveling north bound on I-470 out of Lee’s Summit. The caller stated the male driver was repeatedly striking the female and she appeared injured. The suspect vehicle proceeded onto west bound I-70 where IPD Dispatchers received at least two additional calls from citizens reporting the continuous assault. One caller followed the suspect vehicle and reported that the female had made numerous attempts to exit the vehicle as it traveled on the Interstate. An IPD officer finally caught up to the suspect vehicle when it exited onto Noland Rd. A car stop was initiated, the suspect slowed, and the female tried to exit, but could not before the suspect sped off. A pursuit was initiated and the pursuing officer could see the male again repeatedly striking the female. The suspect ultimately ended up on 39th Street and went east from Phelps Road at high speeds. The suspect crashed into another vehicle at the 39th and Little Blue Parkway. The driver of the second vehicle was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. The female victim was also transported for serious injuries. The suspect was treated at the hospital for minor injuries and released into police custody. No one else was in either vehicle.
No names are being released at this time and charges are pending. The incident is being investigated by both the Investigations and Traffic Unit.
Updates will be made when available.
