On August 6th, 2013, the city participated in the 30th annual National Night Out against crime. The event was held in the Pharaoh Theater parking lot at Liberty and Maple. Based on the number of raffle tickets handed out at the gate, and the concession numbers, we estimated the attendance to be around 500. We had several first responder units participate in the event, including the traffic unit, SRT, EOD, K-9, Fire Department, Emergency Preparedness, AMR, Sugar Creek Police Department (Explorers) and the VIPS.

We would like to thank the Chief, command staff and numerous patrol officers that came out and showed their support for the event. We really appreciated all of your support. It made all of our work worth it!

We were contacted by numerous citizens in attendance who expressed their appreciation for the event itself, but many were thankful for the opportunity to speak to an officer one on one. The opportunity to interact socially with the citizens of our city is far too infrequent. It is events like this one, where we have numerous officers come out, interact and show they care, that help in gaining the support of the community we serve.

Thank you all for making the event such a success!

‘America’s Night Out Against Crime’

On Tuesday, August 6th, neighborhoods throughout Independence are invited to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the "30th Annual National Night Out" crime and drug prevention event. National Night Out is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and co-sponsored locally by the Independence Police Department, the City of Independence and various area businesses.

Nationwide, this event will involve over 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. Territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world. In all over 37 million people are expected to participate in 'America's Night Out Against Crime'.

National Night Out is designed to : (1) Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness: (2) Generate support for, and participation in local anticrime efforts; (3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and (4) Send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

From 5pm to 8 p.m. on August 6th, residents in neighborhoods throughout Independence and across the nation are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors and police.

Officer John Syme and Officer Billy Pope, with the Independence Police Department, have arranged a large community block-party “On the Square” located on the corner of N. Liberty Street and W. Maple Avenue.

We invite neighborhoods city-wide to join us to "Give Crime a Going Away Party".

There will be food, informational handouts, free giveaways and demonstrations from the various units within the police department, including the K-9, Special Response Team, and Traffic Safety units, among others.

Contact Officers John Syme , (816) 325-7643 or Billy Pope, 325-7645 with the Crime Prevention Unit for additional information.
