officers and car Numerous career and advancement opportunities exist within the Independence Police Department. Whether your interest is in a career as a certified Police Officer or in one of the essential civilian positions, the Independence Police Department is constantly seeking to hire the most qualified individuals to staff the department.

Specific entry level positions with the police department include Police Officers, Administrative Specialists, Crime Analysts, Crime Scene Investigators, Criminalists, Detention Officers, Fiscal Management positions, Latent Print Examiners, Parking Enforcement Officers, Police Desk Clerks, Property Control Technicians, Records Unit Clerks, and Telecommunicators.

Application Process

Whenever the police department anticipates a vacancy in a position, we will request Human Resources post the position in order for the department to establish an eligibility list of qualified candidates. The posting will contain the salary range for the position, a position description summary, the minimum qualifications for the position, work schedule, and the posting closing date.

To be considered for a position you must first complete an application. Applications are only accepted when an official job posting has been advertised by Human Resources. Applications are submitted online and must be completed by the closing date on the job posting. Applications must be filled out completely and it is recommended that applicants attach their resume at the time of application. The city is an equal opportunity employer.

Eligibility

The basic eligibility requirements for police department positions are outlined below:

Police Officer

Minimum qualifications:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age to be certified as a police officer
  • Must be a United States Citizen
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent (college degree or college course work in criminal justice preferred)
  • Possess/maintain a valid driver’s license by date of hire and have a good driving record
  • Must not have been discharged from the military under dishonorable conditions
  • Have no serious criminal record
  • Have an excellent work history and attendance record
  • Residency in the City of Independence is not required

Eligible candidates must:

  • Pass a comprehensive written examination
  • Pass a physical abilities test
  • Pass an oral interview
  • Pass a polygraph examination
  • Pass a psychological evaluation
  • Undergo an extensive background investigation and have the ability to render credible testimony in a court of law
  • Pass a medical physical and drug screen
  • Successfully complete a 13 week Field Training Officer Program and serve a 12 month probationary period after appointment
  • Non-certified police officer candidates selected for hire are required to pass a state certified police academy for a Class “A” P.O.S.T certification

Civilian Positions

Minimum qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Must not have been discharged from the military under dishonorable conditions
  • Have no serious criminal record
  • Have an excellent work history and attendance record
  • Residency in the City of Independence is not required

Eligible candidates must:

  • Pass an oral interview
  • Pass a polygraph examination
  • Pass a psychological evaluation
  • Undergo an extensive background investigation
  • Pass a drug screen

There are many different civilian positions within the police department and most of the positions have their own additional qualifications and specific requirements. Additional requirements may include a written exam, a typing test, an observation period/job shadow, a hearing test, a body drag test and a probationary period. Interested candidates should reference the requirements listed on the specific job postings that are posted by Human Resources when a selection process is ongoing.

Salary Information

A few positions within the police department are non-union positions but the majority are governed by one of three bargaining unit/union contracts (Fraternal Order of Police, Communication Workers of America, or Service Employees International Union). Hourly salaries for union positions are negotiated between the City and the Union. Some positions may also have an additional shift differential allowance or a clothing allowance.
