THE CITY OF INDEPENDENCE IS RECRUITING MISSOURI CERTIFIED POLICE OFFICERS AND NON-CERTIFIED CANDIDATES FOR THE SOLE PURPOSE OF ESTABLISHING AN ELIGIBILITY LIST FOR THE INDEPENDENCE POLICE DEPARTMENT. THE ELIGIBILITY LIST IS TYPICALLY GOOD FOR ONE YEAR.

Position Summary: Performs challenging police work within various divisions of the Police Department relating to protection of life and property, enforcing laws and ordinances, and preserving order throughout the community. Patrols assigned areas by car or on foot; responds to calls related to various crimes committed or in progress; disturbances, prowlers, etc.; effects arrests; administers first aid; and directs traffic. Officers are also responsible for the enforcement of applicable city ordinances, state and federal laws. Conducts criminal investigations; interviews victims, witnesses and suspects; and completes a wide variety of police reports. Perform related duties. On successful completionof the FTO program, newly hired officers are assigned to the Patrol Division. The Patrol Division currently works 12 hour shifts, with shifts (days or nights) being bid annually by seniority.

Minimum Qualifications: High school graduate or GED (college degree or college course work in criminal justice preferred), valid Missouri Driver’s License by date of hire, a good driving record, pass a comprehensive written examination, physical agility test, oral interview, polygraph examination, psychological evaluation, undergo an extensive background investigation with the ability to render credible testimony in a court of law, pass a medical examination and drug screen, successfully complete a 13-week F.T.O. program, and serve a 12-month probationary period after appointment. Non-certified candidates are required to pass a state certified police academy for a Class "A", P.O.S.T. certification for 600 hours.

Salary and Benefits: The City offers a comprehensive benefit package which includes both health and dental insurance, retirement program through LAGERS, paid holidays and vacation, in addition to a competitive salary range with annual increases:

Hourly Salary Rate:

Entry in 2010; $18.66. Entry Level with Experience* $20.76

January 2011; $19.41 *$21.59

January 2012; $20.18 *$22.46

* Four years of experience comparable to serving with this department

In addition to the annual increases, an Officer will receive an increase of 11.25% on their anniversary of their fourth year of service with the department.

The written examination will be given to all applicants, May 22, 2010, at 8:00 a.m. at the Palmer Center, 218A N. Pleasant Street, Independence, MO 64050.  No notification will be sent prior to the testing date.  There is a $15.00 testing fee which will be collected at the time of the test.  You must have correct cash, check or money order.  A physical agility test will be given immediately following the written test; applicants are encouraged to dress accordingly.
