On Tuesday, October 7th, neighborhoods throughout Independence are invited to join forces with communities nationwide for the “National Night Out" crime and drug prevention event. National Night Out is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and co-sponsored locally by the Independence Police Department.
National Night Out is designed to:
(1) Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness:
(2) Generate support for, and participation in local anti-crime efforts;
(3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
(4) Send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 7, residents in neighborhoods throughout Independence are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors and police.
Independence Police Officer John Syme and Officer Billy Pope have partnered with the Local Investment Commission (LINC) and the Independence Economic Development Council (EDC) and arranged a large community block-party located at McCoy Park (800 N. Bess Truman Parkway). We invite neighborhoods city-wide to join us to "Give Crime a Going Away Party."
There will be food, informational handouts, free giveaways and demonstrations from various units within the police department, including the K-9, Special Response Team and Traffic Safety units.
