City of Independence asks residents to follow new Jackson County orders

City of Independence Mayor Eileen Weir today asked residents of Independence to follow the updated Jackson County orders which go into effect on Friday, November 20.

“There has been a dramatic growth of COVID cases in the metro region and across the state of Missouri in the last two weeks,” Mayor Eileen Weir said. “Given the rate of community spread in our region, medical professionals and public health officials are concerned that those rates will continue to grow following the Thanksgiving holiday. Indoor gatherings of any size with those outside of your immediate household pose an increased risk. Please follow the gathering limits, wear masks, practice social distancing and continue to regularly wash your hands.”

Mask updates -

Under the new Safer at Home Plan, which can be found here, https://bit.ly/3pF9y4D, all individuals over the age of five are asked to wear a mask covering their nose and mouth when in indoor and outdoor public spaces. This includes workplaces, businesses, schools, places of worship, gyms, public facilities, bus stops, parks, playgrounds, and outdoor restaurant/bar patio seating. Masks can only be removed in a restaurant or bar when an individual is actively eating or drinking.

Changes for food and drinking establishments -

Restaurants, taverns and public or private membership-only events spaces that serve food or drink are required to limit occupants to 50 percent of the building occupancy and must close at 10 p.m. Further patrons are required to be seated and masked at all times, unless they are actively eating or drinking.

Changes for gatherings –

All gatherings shall not exceed ten people unless attendees wear a face covering and maintain social distancing. Those gatherings that exceed 10 people are required to submit a Gathering Protocol at least seven business days before the event. These protocols must be approved by the City and shared in a place that all attendees can view. You can find the Events and Gathering page on the City website here, indep.us/covideventsgatherings.

Everyone is strongly discouraged from gathering with individuals outside of their immediate family for the Thanksgiving holiday.

The County has updated their Frequently Asked Questions section to address questions related to the modified order at jacksongov.org/1193/Recovery-Plan-FAQs.
