City of Independence announces new event gathering protocol, changing hours at City facilities

The City of Independence today announced they would assist Jackson County in the implementation of new orders related to events and COVID-19 safety protocols. On Oct. 2, the Jackson County Health Department announced new gathering protocol for events with more than 100 people. Any individual, venue or organization that is planning gatherings with more than 100 people will need to fill out the forms located here, indep.us/covideventsgatherings, and must submit all documentation at least 72 hours ahead of their event.

“We are committed to working with Jackson County and our Independence residents as we take steps to protect one another through this pandemic,” Mayor Eileen Weir said. “Our City staff will be reviewing these applications and following up with the individuals, venues and organizations holding these events, many of which we have existing relationships with already. The main focus of these gathering protocols is to ensure appropriate steps are taken to ensure mask wearing, social distancing and appropriate cleaning measures to keep everyone as safe as possible.”

These guidelines go into effect on Friday, Oct. 9. Events scheduled for this week have been directed to City reviewers by Jackson County. The public can find information about gathering protocols and other gathering recommendations at indep.us/covideventsgatherings. Events included in this change include:

  • Sporting events
  • Weddings
  • Church services
  • Meetings/lunches

If you have questions related to your event and if it meets criteria for this protocol, please email covid19@indepmo.org.

In addition to the new event gathering protocol, the City is adding additional hours of availability to the public. Beginning on Monday, Oct. 12, City Hall, the Independence Police Headquarters lobby and the Independence Utilities Center will be open from 8 AM to 5 PM on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Municipal Court will be open on the lower level of City Hall from 8 AM-4PM on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, and from 8 AM to 12 PM on Fridays. The closures on Wednesdays and Fridays allow for additional cleaning at these venues. Individuals visiting these locations will continue to be required to participate in a health check, properly wear a mask at all times and socially distance. An updated overview of the current City of Independence Facilities and Services Reopening Plan can be found here, indep.us/2020phases.

“We are working closely with health officials to continue to monitor this situation,” Mayor Weir said. “We have zip codes in Independence with a positivity rate greater than 30 percent but we have seen very few cases within our schools that are meeting in person. This shows the tremendous importance of diligence and enforcement. We are all tired. It’s been an incredibly challenging year but by working together, thinking of those around us and taking simple steps to protect ourselves and others – we will get through this together.”

Finally, please note that the City of Independence Parks|Recreation|Tourism Truman Memorial Building and Sermon Center are open different hours. The Sermon Center is open Monday through Thursday from 8 AM to 8 PM and Fridays and Saturdays from 8 AM to 5 PM. It is closed on Sundays. The Truman Memorial Building is open Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 AM to 6 PM and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 AM to 7 PM. It is closed Friday through Sunday.
