Independence Mayor Eileen Weir will join the Independence Girls Softball Association (IGSA) as they kick-off their Fallball season. The Mayor will provide opening comments before the first pitch and participate in a softball toss tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Independence Athletic Complex located at 17800 Salisbury Road. This is part of the “Play Ball Summer” initiative, which was created by the United States Conference of Mayors (USCM) to encourage kids to pursue an active and healthy lifestyle while enjoying the fun of baseball and softball.
“The baseball and softball seasons are coming to a close as we finish September and transition into fall sports,” Mayor Weir said. “The Play Ball Summer program is a great way to highlight the important role baseball and softball play in many children’s lives. We will be joined by six teams today who have practiced countless hours, created a team of friends and learned the importance of sportsmanship. These are skills that work on and off a field. I am proud to celebrate the Play Ball Summer Program for the third year and am already looking forward to opening day next spring.”
The softball toss will begin at 9 a.m. to help players warm-up before the day of games. The Mayor will provide opening remarks at 9:15 a.m. on Fields 12, 13 and 14 in the northeast area of the Independence Athletic Complex. A weather determination will be made at approximately 7:30 a.m.
