Taking Care of Yourself and Your Family
Keep the family together, rest often and eat well to avoid stress and health problems. Try to get seven to eight hours sleep each night. Keep your family's diet as nourishing as possible under the circumstances. Accept support from family, friends and others. Talk about your feelings to release tension and de-stress. Discuss the situation with your children honestly and openly.

Tips:

  • Be extra patient. Be considerate of each other. Determine what's really important and pace yourself. Take things one step at a time and don't be afraid to ask for help. Many people are around who want to help and will help. They just need to know what they can do and what will be most helpful to you.

  • Children especially need help in regaining a sense of security. Talking together and being honest, yet reassuring, about problems the family faces can help children feel more in comfortable and in control.

  • It is normal for children to be afraid. They need to be encouraged to talk about their feelings and fear. Be sure to provide simple answers to questions. Reassure them that they will be taken care of and that they are loved.

  • As much as possible, also help others - neighbors, friends, and family. One of the best way you can help is to just listen. Show by words and actions that you care. A friendly gesture can help in times of crisis. Small, kind deeds and sincere expressions of compassion and affection will mean a lot.

  • If you cannot shake feelings of despair or other signs of stress, get professional help or talk with friends, family, or members of the clergy. Just talking goes a long way to relieve stress and anxiety.
