Independence has separate sanitary and
storm sewer systems.
The Sewer Maintenance Division is responsible for the
maintenance and repair of over 578 miles of sanitary sewers and over 12,000 manholes.
Service is both preventive and corrective. Approximately 25 million gallons
of wastewater are carried through the sanitary sewer lines each day for treatment
at a wastewater facility.
Maintenance activities consist of flushing and cleaning sewer lines by hydraulic
pressure cleaning, mechanical rodding, and root sawing.
Closed circuit video inspection and dye/smoke testing
are used to respond to complaints from citizens, identify inflow and infiltration,
and to inspect new construction. Another part of the Sewer Maintenance Division's
activities include
surveillance and analysis, such as flow monitoring, sampling, and
environmental inspections.
Repair activities consist of pull and replace rehabilitation of sanitary sewer lines,
trenchless technology, and repair work.
