The City operates a centralized Technology Services Department that provides information
technology (IT) services to all general government departments as well as the three
City-owned utilities.
The Technology Services Department provides support services in the following areas:
- Application Software Development
- IBM Mid-range Computer Systems
- Network Servers
- Cyber Security
- Desktop and Mobile Computer Systems
- Data Networks – Wide Area Networks (WANs) and Local Area Networks (LANs)
- Voice Services and Technologies
- City 7
The Application Development Section includes the development and maintenance of
over 40 computer applications that run on the central computer system.
City 7 is the government-access cable television channel in Independence, Missouri.
City 7 broadcasts various programs from local, state, and federal governments. City
7 is also responsible for any in-house video filming and editing, including city
council meetings, public services announcements, and informational videos.
The Cyber Security Specialist is responsible for the protection of the City’s IT
assets. This position monitors the City’s compliance with regulatory security initiatives,
develops necessary security policies and practices, and guides other IT and City
staff in the enforcement of those policies. The Cyber Security Specialist also works
with City management to perform risk assessments and develop mitigation plans as
needed.
The Network/Technical Support Section includes the support of all voice communications,
data communications, computer networks, and connects approximately 25 locations
and a phone system network of Avaya PBXs'.
The Network/Technical Support Section also supports a Help Desk to assist users
with technical issues. The Help Desk is available to employees from 7:30 a.m. to
5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
The Operations Section includes the support of the central computer system, The
central computer system consists of two IBM iSeries AS/400 computers.
The Technology Services Department participates in the annual Digital Cities Survey.
