City of Independence Celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

This year’s theme is “It Began with a Dream.” The Keynote Speaker for the event will be former Kansas City Royal and Golden Glove winner Frank White, Jr. He is currently the serves as Jackson County Executive and as first base coach of the Kansas City T-Bones.

The 2016 celebration will mark the 29th year of this event that is co-sponsored by the City of Independence, The Community of Concerned Citizens, Local Investment Commission (LINC), the Human Relations Commission, Ministerial Alliance, and The Examiner.

Along with the celebration, the John Olivarez Scholarship essay contest will once again be held. This is open to any high school senior residing in the City of Independence and planning to attend a four-year accredited college, a community college or a vocational school.
