SilverSneakers® Fitness Program

The Palmer Center is proud to begin providing SilverSneakers® – the nation’s largest older adult fitness program – available through select Medicare health plans. 5-A-Day Bingo

The Palmer Center will host 5-A-Day Bingo at 12:15 p.m. Tuesdays, March 4 and 18. Fruits and vegetables are contributed by Hy-Vee on 23rd Street to use as prizes during this nutrition-education bingo game. The Palmer Center is located at 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO. Show Us Your Shamrocks Celebration

Come join the fun at this event at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 17. Bring store-bought, un-opened finger snacks for the snack table. If you plan to stay for lunch, make a reservation by no later than noon on Thursday, March 14. For more information call The Palmer Center at 325-6200.

Red Hat Tea Party

Any Red Hat Chapter member is invited to attend this annual event at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 3, which includes a variety of hot teas to choose from, tea time bingo with prizes and a dessert bar. Please bring your own tea cup and pull together your very best Red Hat outfit. Pre-registration is required by Monday, March 31. Fee is $5 per person. Powell Gardens & Cockrell Day Trip

Adults 50+ can enjoy a lovely spring day at Powell Gardens and experience 970 acres of botanical bliss. The trip will include a narrated trolley ride and a light lunch at Café Thyme. Afterwards there will be plenty of time to explore the gift shop, terrace gardens and the Heartland Harvest Garden. On the drive home, we will stop at Cockrell Mercantile, Kansas City’s unique shopping experience. This fun trip will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, April 11. Deadline to pre-register will be Friday, March 21. Price of registration is $49.

Health Education & You in 2014

Adults 50+ may come to The Palmer Center to learn more about knee replacements at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 13. The Palmer Center is located at 218A N. Pleasant St. For more information call 325-6200.

Korean War History Presentation

Come view original artifacts from the Korean War. Presented by Bob Jones and Paul Wolfegeher at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 20. The Palmer Center is located at 218A N. Pleasant St. For more information call 325-6200.

AARP Smart Driver Course

Tune up your driving skills and update your knowledge of the rules of the road. Class will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, March 28. Pre-registration is required by Friday, March 21, with payment due to instructor on the day of class. Fee is $15 for AARP members and $20 for others. Co-sponsored by AARP. White Elephant Bingo

Join friends at The Palmer Center for a game of White Elephant Bingo. Bring a wrapped, white elephant gift to use as a prize at 12:15 p.m. on Thursday, March 27. The Palmer Center is located at 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO. For more information call 325-6200.

Blood Pressure Checks

Adults 50+ may have their blood pressure and blood sugar checked by the Visiting Nurses Association from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 18. From 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 12, blood pressure only will be checked by Dr. John Chapman. The Palmer Center is located at 218A N. Cover to Cover

The Palmer Center’s book club "Cover to Cover" will meet at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 20 at the Truman Memorial Building. March’s book is "Emily, Alone" by Stewart O’Nan. The Write Place Poetry Society

Adults 50+ are invited to read their individual poetry writings or reflect upon the work of others during the next Write Place Poetry Society meeting to be held at The Palmer Center at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 20. Palmer Center Advisory Council

The Palmer Center is accepting applications for Advisory Council members to fill two vacancies. Members must be a resident of Independence, have a strong interest in senior center and parks and recreation programs for older adults, and be able to commit to attendance at a meeting each month. Wake-Up Workout

Wake-Up Workout is offered at 9 a.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at The Palmer Center. This low impact aerobics class for adults 50+ benefits the cardiovascular system. No pre-registration is required. A $2 per class fee applies. The Palmer Center is located at 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO. For more information call 325-6200.

Sittin’ Fit

Sittin’ Fit is held at 10:30 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday at The Palmer Center. These gentle chair exercises are beneficial for the beginning, older exerciser. Skillbuilders

Widows, widowers, and caregivers – enjoy a Danish and coffee while learning from weekly topics presented by informative speakers. Co-sponsored with Heartland Widowed Persons Service, Kansas City Hospice and Crossroads Hospice from 9:45 a.m. to 11:50 a.m on Tuesdays, March 11 through May 20. For more information call 325-6200. If you are experiencing difficult life changes, loneliness, the loss of a loved one, concerns about the future, loss of a job, a lack of meaning in life . . . .free counseling services are available at The Palmer Center. For an appointment, please fill out a contact card at The Palmer Center’s front desk or call with your information and you will be contacted by a counselor to meet in a private setting at The Palmer Center. SilverSneakers Classic

SilverSneakers Classic is offered to SilverSneakers members at 10 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday at the Truman Memorial Building. A variety of exercises are designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement and activities for daily living. A chair is available if needed for support. The Truman Memorial Building is located at 416 W. Maple in Independence, MO.

SilverSneakers Circuit

SilverSneakers Circuit is offered to SilverSneakers members at 11:15 a.m. every Monday and Wednesday at the Truman Memorial Building. This program is a combination of fun and fitness to increase your cardiovascular and muscular endurance power with a standing circuit workout. The use of hand-held w e ight, elastic tubing with handles, and a SilverSneakers ball is alternated with low-impact aerobic choreography. A chair is available if needed for seated or standing support. The Truman Memorial Building is located at 416 W. Maple in Independence, MO.

TRX Essentials Flexibility Class

Adults 50+ are welcome to try out the TRX Essentials Flexibility Class from 1 to 1:45 p.m. every Monday. Improve your posture, increase range of motion and build greater stability from head to toe with the Essentials Flexibility workout. This class is designed for those who are fairly active and fit. No pre-registration is required; $3 fee per class. Classes will be held at the Truman Memorial Building, 416 W. Maple in Independence, MO. For more information call 325-6200.

Gentle Tai Chi

A "Gentle Tai Chi" class is offered at The Palmer Center for adults 50+ at 6 p.m. every Monday. This video class is beneficial to those who are new to Tai Chi. Some exercises will be performed sitting down, while others will be done while standing. Pre-registration is not required and there is no fee to participate. The Palmer Center is located at 218A N. Stretch & Tone

Stretch & Tone is held at 9 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday at The Palmer Center. Maintain and improve your muscular strength, using a variety of hand-held equipment. No pre-registration is required. PEPPI

Adults 50+ are invited to participate in PEPPI, a nationally-recognized exercise program to work on core strength in order to balance effectively and prevent falls. The class, co-sponsored by the Independence Health and Parks & Recreation departments, meets at 10 a.m. every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at The Palmer Center. Zumba Gold

The Palmer Center is offering ZUMBA GOLD classes for adults 50+ from 10 to 10:45 a.m. every Wednesday at the Truman Memorial Building, 416 W. Maple in Independence, MO. This class fuses hypnotic Latin and International rhythms with easy-to-follow moves to create a dynamic workout. The cost is $2 per class and no pre-registration is required. Line Dancing

Adults 50+ are invited to receive simple beginner’s instruction in line dance from 11 a.m. to noon and participate in open line dance from 12:05 to 2 p.m. every Monday. The cost is $1 per person. There is also instructed line dancing from 12:05 to 2 p.m. every Friday; the cost is $2 per person. All classes are held at The Palmer Center, located at 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO. Afternoon Dances

Afternoon dances are held at 1 p.m. every Wednesday at The Palmer Center. The Ed Smith Band provides music and dancers are allowed to bring commercially-prepared finger foods. The entry fee is $3. Learn to Belly Dance

Belly dancing is an enlivening dance that helps tone the body through a low-impact workout. Adults 50+ are invited to join friends from 2 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. on Thursdays for this fun class, held at the Truman Memorial Building, 416 W. Maple in Independence, MO. Come prepared for some learning, fun and fitness. The cost is $1 per class and no pre-registration is required.

Pickleball

Adults 50+ are invited to play Intermediate Pickleball at The Palmer Center from 1 to 5:30 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday and from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. This exciting competitive game focuses on agility, shot placement and strategy, as opposed to power. Beginner play is offered from 12 to 1 p.m. each Thursday, so come try it – it’s free for all. Bare Bones Art

Are you creative, have an art project or idea you would like to share? At 12:30 p.m. each Monday you can gather with other artists – bring your own project, create together and help each other. Crochet 101

Game Time!

Adults 50+ are invited to play a variety of games at 12:15 p.m. every day at The Palmer Center, 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO. Games consist of Hand in Foot Canasta, Card Golf and Mexican Dominoes. For more information call 325-6200.

Wood Carving Club*

Adults 50+ are invited to join in on the camaraderie and friendship of others as you try your hand at wood carving from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. on Mondays and 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. on Wednesdays at the Sermon Center, 201 N. Dodgion. *Sermon Center membership required. For more information call 325-6200.

Monthly Grief Support Group

The Palmer Center and Crossroads Hospice are offering a monthly grief support group from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday each month at the Truman Memorial Building. Any type of loss will be discussed, whether its loss of a loved one, driving abilities, independence, etc., as well as myths associated with grief. The Truman Memorial Building is located at 416 W. Alzheimer’s Support Group

Centennial Birthday Party Package

Adults celebrating their 100th birthday are welcome to celebrate this milestone by having their special day at The Palmer Center, 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO. Tagilima Crafts

Vital Volunteer Program

The Palmer Center is currently accepting applications for volunteers who would like to teach a special skill to older adults or be a general program leader. Please call 325-6200 to request an application.

Palmer Center Fitness Center Memberships

Adults 50+ are invited to tour The Palmer Center Fitness Room and consider joining as a member for a nominal annual fee. The Fitness Room includes several cardiovascular and weight-training machines. Each new member will complete a fitness assessment and receive an orientation to the equipment. Call 325-6200 for more information about becoming a member.
