September Activities and Events at The Palmer Center

(INDEPENDENCE, Mo.) Thursday, August 15, 2013 – The Palmer Center at 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO is operated by the City of Independence and is dedicated to the mission of improving the overall health of adults 50+. Java Joe Coffee Bar
For adults 50+, sample specialty gourmet coffee on our patio (weather permitting). Coffee is served at 10:30 a.m. on Thursdays, September 5 through September 26 at The Palmer Center located at 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO.

National Senior Center Month
Adults 50+ are invited for complimentary donuts and apple cider on The Palmer Center patio to celebrate National Senior Center Month. This year’s theme is "Senior Centers – Experts at Living Well." This event is scheduled for 9 to 10 a.m., Friday, September 6.

Fall Fiesta of Colors Walk
Adults 50+ are invited to take a leisurely stroll with friends among colorful trees. This program will be held at George Owens Nature Park, 1601 Speck Rd. in Independence. This event is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, September 11 and 25.

It’s Not All in Your Head
Adults 50+ are invited to learning about maintaining good mental and emotional heath that is essential for older adults. Physical, mental and emotional challenges can interfere with relationships, activities of daily living and sense of well-being. Three presentations on different topics will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesdays, September 17, September 24, and October 1, will be held at The Palmer Center located at 218A N. Living The Platinum Lifestyle
For adults 50+, guest speaker Tony Tungo will share his extensive knowledge regarding the challenges and importance of maintaining a healthy and balanced lifestyle. Enjoy a complimentary smoothie while you gain valuable information about pursuit of a healthy lifestyle. Come join us at 10:15 a.m., Wednesday, September 18 at The Palmer Cente, 218A N. Dealing with the Loss of a Loved One
Emotions and changes in the days, weeks and months following a death can be overwhelming. In this class for adults 50+, you are provided the tools to aid in your grieving process. Co-sponsored with Three Rivers Hospice, the session will be held 10:45 a.m. Thursday, September 26 at The Palmer Center, 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO. Senior Gems
Take a positive perspective to Alzheimer’s and dementia care through the Senior Gems approach. Co-sponsored with Senior Helpers of Lee’s Summit, learn a unique viewpoint on how our brains control our bodies and behaviors – and use that knowledge to help change resistance and refusals into participation and interactions. Pay $5 for materials to the class instructor on September 28. Presentation is from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, September 28 at The Palmer Center located at 218A N. Autumn Adventure
Adults 50+ are invited to join Parks and Recreation on an Autumn Adventure day tour to visit Miller’s Pecan Farm in DeWitt, MO. Enjoy their warm welcome, complimentary treats, learn how pecans are harvested, sample various pecans and stock up for holiday baking. Lunch will be provided at a local restaurant followed by a stop at Peter’s Market for apples and fruit for your pies. The tour is scheduled for Thursday, October 24. 5-A-Day Bingo
The Palmer Center will host 5-A-Day Bingo at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, September 3. Fruits and vegetables are contributed by Hy-Vee on 23rd Street to use as prizes during this nutrition-education bingo game. The Palmer Center is located at 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO. Intermediate Senior Tap Dance
Have you always loved watching a tap dancer? Listen as your feet rhythmically strike the floor to the tunes in this intermediate tap dance class and experience a whole new way to have fun! Please bring your own tap shoes. The next Intermediate Senior Tap Dance class will start on Wednesday, September 4. The class will meet for four weeks at 11 a.m. Pre-registration is required; the fee is $20. Call 325-6200 to register at least three days in advance or if you have any questions. Diabetic Foot Screening
St. Mary’s Hospital will provide adults 50+ free diabetic foot screenings, blood sugar and blood pressure checks from 10 to 11:15 a.m. Wednesday, September 4. The Palmer Center is located at 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO. For more information call 325-6200.

Monthly Grief Support
This support group will discuss any type of loss, such as loss of a loved one, driving abilities, independence, etc., as well as myths associated with grief. Sessions are from 1 to 2:30 p.m. the first and third Wednesdays of each month with the next session starting Wednesday, September 4. This support group is co-sponsored by Crossroads Hospice. Blood Pressure Check
Adults 50+ may come to The Palmer Center from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 11 to have their blood pressure checked by Dr. John Chapman. The Palmer Center is located at 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO. For more information call 325-6200.

Blood Pressure and Blood Sugar Check
Adults 50+ may come to The Palmer Center from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 17 to have their blood pressure and blood sugar checked by the Visiting Nurses Association. The Palmer Center is located at 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO. For more information call 325-6200.

Health Education and You
Adults 50+ are invited to a free Health Presentation from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 12 at The Palmer Center. This month’s topic is "Diabetes & You." Cover to Cover
The Palmer Center’s book club "Cover to Cover" will meet at 2 p.m. on Thursday, September 19, at the Truman Memorial Building. September’s book is "Memory Keeper’s Daughter" by Kim Edwards. The Write Place Poetry Society
Adults 50+ are invited to read their individual poetry writings or reflect upon the work of others during the next Write Place Poetry Society meeting to be held at The Palmer Center at 3 p.m. Thursday, September 19. White Elephant Bingo

Grief Recovery Outreach Session
Get together with others actively grieving over the loss of a loved one. This session will be held from 1 – 2:30 p.m. T elebrate this milestone by having their special day at The Palmer Center, 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO. A complimentary room will be made available on Saturday afternoons, based on space availability. Proof of Independence residency is required. Call 325-6200 for more information.

Tagilima Crafts
Adults 50+ are welcome to join others for a time of crafts and socializing from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. every Thursday at The Palmer Center. The Palmer Center is located at 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO. For more information call 325-6200.

Vital Volunteer Program
The Palmer Center is currently accepting applications for volunteers who would like to teach a special skill to older adults or be a general program leader. Please call 325-6200 to request an application.

Lowery’s Music Magic Classes
Adults 50+ are invited to learn to play the organ at The Palmer Center, 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO. Three different levels of classes are offered for 10-week sessions on Tuesdays. Call 325-6200 for more information on class start dates and pricing.

Palmer Center Fitness Center Memberships
Adults 50+ are invited to tour The Palmer Center Fitness Room and consider joining as a member for a nominal annual fee. The Fitness Room includes several cardiovascular and weight-training machines. Each new member will complete a fitness assessment and receive an orientation to the equipment. Call 325-6200 for more information about becoming a member.
