On June 6, 2013, a new symbol for Independence, representing two years of collaborative conversations within the community, with organizations and with residents, was unveiled. The new symbol is a result of a consensus that Independence is a city of real people making real progress. “Shout Out Independence” turned that perception into reality. Shout Out Independence is more than rebranding, it is a movement aimed at a community of real people making real progress.
The “Shout Out Independence” event on the Historic Independence Square hosted more than a thousand citizens of Independence, called to show civic pride via social media, word-of-mouth and just all-around buzz.
The evenings emcee, Doug Cowan, CEO of Community Services League, was joined by mascots Mac of the Missouri Mavericks and Calvin of the Missouri Comets as well as Ralph and his mules. Live music by ‘Right on Red’ got the crowd groovin’. Families were in abundance in the bounce house, while face painting, balloon animals and stilt-walkers kept folks entertained. Along with residents, more than 30 local community organizations were represented.
The civic pride was palpable as the scene was set and the crowd was poised. The large scaffolding, built by Tom Waters of Corporate Copy Print, served as the backdrop. The Shout Out Independence video was shown on the LCD screen as Mayor Don Reimal finally pulled the cord for the big reveal: the rebranded symbol, “Real People. Real Progress.” The crowd erupted in cheers, confetti guns exploded and Mac and Calvin tossed out t-shirts to the crowd.
With honest clarity, with community input and earnest enthusiasm of a city that constantly works toward progress, innovation and creativity; a new concept was born. A way of life, a way of being and a way to move into the future…Real People. Real Progress.
To that end, we will celebrate community engagement.
We have created a tool for people to show their pride in the great values and specialness of Independence. Everyone is encouraged to use the symbol in any way they can think of: e-mail signatures, newsletters, websites, business cards, t-shirts, team uniforms, social media….the possibilities are endless.
