Sermon Center Opened as Cooling Center
July 9, 2013
(INDEPENDENCE, Mo.) Tuesday, July 9, 2013 – Because of high temperatures and excessive humidity expected today from 12 – 7 p.m., the National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory through 7 p.m. this evening.
The Parks and Recreation Department will use the Roger T. Sermon Community Center as a “Cooling Center” for those who may not have air conditioning or need a place to get out of the heat for a while. Located at 201 North Dodgion (southeast corner of Noland and Truman Road), the Sermon Center is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Health Director Larry Jones urges those who do not have a place to take shelter from the heat to go to the Sermon Center. The center is air-conditioned with ice water, television and games for children are available. Those using the Cooling Center should bring personal items such as medicine and ready-to-eat snacks.
“The term ‘Cooling Center’ is used because it will serve as a place for people to take refuge from the heat,” Jones said. “It is a place to sit, have a drink of water, etc. No other services are provided. Of course if medical attention is required for an emergency, appropriate help will be contacted to respond.”
For additional information on heat-related illness, please contact the Independence Health Department at (816) 325-7185.
