Packet pick-up and in-person registration for the second annual Independence Park Trot 5K Run/Walk will be from 3 – 7 p.m. Friday, May 3 at Bass Pro Shops, 18001 Bass Pro Drive, and from 7 – 7:40 a.m. near the start of the course on Saturday, May 4.
The race is slated to start at 8 a.m. (rain or shine) at the City’s Waterfall Park, located just south of Bass Pro Shops. There is no limit on the number of participants. There is no food drive as part of this year’s event.
All participants may enter a raffle drawing. Raffle prizes are:
• Studio on Main: gift certificates for three private reformer sessions
• Balanced You Studio: gift certificates for two Stand-Up Paddlefit sessions
• Dick’s Sporting Goods gift certificates
• StandUp Blue Springs: passes to upcoming events
• Hy-Vee: gift cards
• Independence Departments of Tourism and Parks & Recreation: passes to Adventure Oasis, Centerpoint Community Ice Center and historic sites around Independence
Awards will be given based on time completion of run for the following age groups: 14 and younger, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 54-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75 and older.
Children 10 and under are eligible to compete in a Kids’ Run, which will begin after the completion of the 5K Run/Walk. Building a Healthier Independence (BHI) Project Coordinator Christina Heinen said the BHI bike blender will be at the race providing free, pedal-powered smoothies after the race.
The BHI grant covers registration, but the Health Department sponsors were added for this year’s event to cover other costs associated with the race. Gold sponsors include Bass Pro Shops, the Examiner, Nature’s Pantry Market, and Studio on Main. Silver sponsors are GEHA and Centerpoint Medical Center. Bronze sponsors are Cosentino’s SunFresh, Balanced You Studio, and StandUp Blue Springs. HyVee has also made a donation to the event.
