Independence Celebrates Historic Preservation Month
April 26, 2013
The Independence Heritage Commission will celebrate May as National Historic Preservation Month, with a great program of events throughout the month. National Historic Preservation Month encourages communities to highlight their local history and historic resources.
The theme for the month, chosen by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, is See! Save! Celebrate. It emphasizes that Historic Preservation can benefit everyone who sees the resources that have been saved and celebrate our community history. Planned events include:
· National Historic Landmark Plaque Dedication
The dedication ceremony for the new plaque to commemorate the expansion of the Harry S. Truman National Historic Landmark District will be held at noon on Saturday, May 4, on the southwest corner of Truman Rd and North Main St.
· Lunch and Learn Presentations
Every Tuesday during May, there will be a Lunch and Learn at noon at the Truman Memorial Building, 416 W. Maple. Presentations will be held on a variety of topics, including Glendale Farm (now the Mansion Apartments) and the Jackson County Courthouse. Each program will be held in Presidential Hall C, and last for an hour. Bring a bag lunch; drinks and dessert will be provided.
· Bus Tours
On Saturday, May 11, the Missouri River Outfitters Chapter of the Santa Fe Trails Association will host a bus tour highlighting the historic trails on the Kansas City area. On Saturday, May 18, the Civil War Round Table of Western Missouri will give a bus tour of the Civil War in Bates County, with a focus on the Battle of Island Mound and the newly opened state historic site. For departure times and details, contact Heather Carpini at (816) 325-7419.
· Trade Show
Beginning at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 23, the Heritage Commission will host an Old Building Trade Show in the gymnasium at the Truman Memorial Building, 416 W. Maple. Vendors experienced in working with vintage buildings will be on hand to talk about their products and services. This is a great opportunity for anyone who owns an older building to meet tradespeople who can do quality work on their structure. Admission is free.
The Harry S. Truman Library and Museum and the Harry S Truman National Historic Site have additional events planned throughout the month.
