City of Independence, Missouri Water Pollution Control
Honored for NACWA National Environmental Achievement Award

(INDEPENDENCE, Mo.) Friday, February 11, 2011 - Independence Water Pollution Control (WPC) has received a National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA) National Environmental Achievement Award for its excellence in Public Information and Education.

NACWA’s Public Information and Education Award is presented for outstanding programs in the following categories: video, printed publication, educational program, or e-media.

Independence Water Pollution Control was selected for this honor for Independence EcoFest – “It’s All About Water.”

“On behalf of the many City departments, organizations and volunteers that contribute to Independence EcoFest, we are extremely honored to receive this national award and recognition,” WPC Director Dick Champion said.

Independence EcoFest is an interactive environmental education festival aimed at teaching children and families the importance of preserving and protecting our natural resources and the environment. The fourth annual EcoFest will be Saturday, June 4 at the City’s 80-acre Waterfall Park, 4501 S. Bass Pro Dr. Last year about 800 visitors attended EcoFest.

Interactive displays such as edible ice cream aquifers, a stream table that demonstrates stream bank erosion and water-themed games are located along the park trail so participants can learn about various water and conservation topics.

“EcoFest was purposefully developed by the City of Independence to engage children and families in a variety of activities that emphasize the importance of water quality, local watersheds, wastewater and storm water management, energy and conservation,” Champion said.

EcoFest is a successful, multi-agency outreach event which allows the City of Independence, state and federal agencies and civic groups to collaboratively engage the public in their distinct missions of environmental protection, Champion said.

Independence Water Pollution Control was recognized with this prestigious honor February 2 at the 2011 NACWA Winter Conference in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
