Independence Opens Warming Center

The City of Independence has issued a Public Safety Advisory to all residents, due to the winter storm that is projected to bring dangerously low temperatures and high accumulations of snow, strong winds and visibility issues.

Independence Parks and Recreation will close the Truman Memorial Building and George Owens Nature Park to the public at 1 p.m. today.

The Sermon Community Center, located at the southeast corner of Noland and Truman Roads, will be used as a daytime warming center. Overnight shelter will be provided by the Salvation Army at their facility at 14700 E. Truman Road. Warming Center and Shelter hours will be as follows:

All buses are in operation throughout Independence and will provide the use of a warming bus at the Independence transfer station.

The Independence Events Center is also closed to the public Tuesday, February 4, which includes the Centerpoint Community Ice and Silverstein Eye Centers Box Office. The Missouri Mavericks vs. Allen Americans hockey game has been rescheduled for Tuesday, February 25. There will be no public skate sessions or classes at Centerpoint Community Ice.

"Safety of our guests is our number one priority at the Independence Events Center and Centerpoint Community Ice. For that reason we felt it was necessary to cancel all activities today," said Paul Fray, Acting General Manager.

Hotels in Independence will remain open and available. The Residence Inn and Fairfield Inn will utilize emergency weather rates Tuesday, February 4 through Thursday, February 6.
