2014 New Year’s Party
Come join the fun with this New Year’s Party at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 2 at the Palmer Center, 218A N. Pleasant Street. Please bring store bought un-opened snacks to contribute to the party snack table.

New Theatre Restaurant – Harvey
Judge Reinhold plays the affable Elwood P. Dowd, a man whose constant companion is a 6’ 3½" tall, invisible rabbit. When Elwood’s social-climbing sister tries to have him committed to a sanitarium, the insanity really begins! Lunch is included; please let us know if you are requesting plate assistance and/or an assisted hearing device at the time of registration. This fun-filled trip to the New Theatre Restaurant will be from 10:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 19. Price is $51.00. Deadline to pre-register is Wednesday, January 29. 5-A-Day Bingo
The Palmer Center will host 5-A-Day Bingo at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, December 3. Fruits and vegetables are contributed by Hy-Vee on 23rd Street to use as prizes during this nutrition-education bingo game. The Palmer Center is located at 218A N. Pleasant St. This program is free and no pre-registration is required. For more information call 325-6200.

Medicare Part D Enrollment
Review your health and prescription drug coverage options. This service, sponsored by MARC, will be held from by appointment only from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 3. Call The Palmer Center’s front desk at 325-6200 to make your appointment.

You will also have the option on a first-come, first-served basis from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. the same day, Tuesday, December 3. No appointments will be taken for this time period. The Palmer Center is located at 218A N. Pleasant St. You will need to bring your social security card and list of current medications with the dosage amounts.

HOME FOR LIFE
Adults 50+ are invited to a free presentation co-sponsored with John Knox Village at 10:45 a.m. on Monday, December 4 at The Palmer Center. Learn some great tips to stay in your home and live independently. The Palmer Center is located at 218A N. Pleasant St. For more information call 325-6200.

Red Hat Pokeno
Join other Red Hat members in this fun game. Don’t forget to bring pennies for your markers! This event is scheduled at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, December 12 at The Palmer Center located at 218A N. Pleasant St.

Intermediate Senior Tap Dance
Have you always loved watching a tap dancer? Listen as your feet rhythmically strike the floor to the tunes in this intermediate tap dance class and experience a whole new way to have fun! Please bring your own tap shoes. The next Intermediate Senior Tap Dance classes will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesdays, December 4 and December 18. Pre-registration is required; the fee is $20. Blood Pressure
Adults 50+ may come to The Palmer Center to have their blood pressure checked from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 11 by Dr. John Chapman, and 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 17 by the Visiting Nurses Association. Health Education and You in 2013!
Come join us at the Palmer Center at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 12 to hear a presentation about Ortho topics. This presentation is co-sponsored by Heritage Physician’s Group. The Palmer Center is located at 218A N. Pleasant St. For more information call 325-6200.

"Speak Out" Series
The topic is Keys to safe driving plus Medications and YOU – making use of the factors involved in safe driving and the use of medications. Adults 50+ are invited to this informative presentation at 10 a.m. on Monday, December 16. The Palmer Center is located at 218A N. Pleasant St.

Cover to Cover
The Palmer Center’s book club "Cover to Cover" will meet at 2 p.m. on Thursday, December 19 at the Truman Memorial Building. December’s book is "Water for Elephants" by Sara Green. The Write Place Poetry Society
Adults 50+ are invited to read their individual poetry writings or reflect upon the work of others during the next Write Place Poetry Society meeting to be held at The Palmer Center at 3 p.m. Thursday, December 19. White Elephant Bingo
Join friends at The Palmer Center for a game of White Elephant Bingo. Bring a wrapped, white elephant gift to use as a prize at 12:15 p.m. on Thursday, December 26. The Palmer Center is located at 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO. For more information call 325-6200.

Palmer Center Advisory Council
The Palmer Center is accepting applications for Advisory Council members to fill two vacancies. Members must be a resident of Independence, have a strong interest in senior center and parks and recreation programs for older adults, and be able to commit to attendance at a meeting each month. Wake-Up Workout
Wake-Up Workout is offered at 9 a.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at The Palmer Center. This low impact aerobics class for adults 50+ benefits the cardiovascular system. Sittin’ Fit
Sittin’ Fit is held at 10:30 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday at The Palmer Center. These gentle chair exercises are beneficial for the beginning, older exerciser. TRX Essentials Flexibility Class
Adults 50+ are welcome to try out the TRX Essentials Flexibility Class from 1 to 1:45 p.m. every Monday. Improve your posture, increase range of motion and build greater stability from head to toe with the Essentials Flexibility workout. This class is designed for those who are fairly active and fit. No pre-registration is required; $3 fee per class. Classes will be held at the Truman Memorial Building, 416 W. Maple in Independence, MO. For more information call 325-6200.

Gentle Tai Chi
A "Gentle Tai Chi" class is offered at The Palmer Center for adults 50+ at 6 p.m. every Monday. This video class is beneficial to those who are new to Tai Chi. Some exercises will be performed sitting down, while others will be done while standing. Pre-registration is not required and there is no fee to participate. The Palmer Center is located at 218A N. Stretch & Tone
Stretch & Tone is held at 9 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday at The Palmer Center. Maintain and improve your muscular strength, using a variety of hand-held equipment. No pre-registration is required. PEPPI
Adults 50+ are invited to participate in PEPPI, a nationally-recognized exercise program to work on core strength in order to balance effectively and prevent falls. The class, co-sponsored by the Independence Health and Parks & Recreation departments, meets at 10 a.m. every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at The Palmer Center. Zumba Gold
The Palmer Center is offering ZUMBA GOLD classes for adults 50+ from 10 to 10:45 a.m. every Wednesday at the Truman Memorial Building, 416 W. Maple in Independence, MO. This class fuses hypnotic Latin and International rhythms with easy-to-follow moves to create a dynamic workout. The cost is $2 per class and no pre-registration is required. Line Dancing
Adults 50+ are invited to receive simple beginner’s instruction in line dance from 11 a.m. to noon and participate in open line dance from 12:05 to 2 p.m. every Monday. The cost is $1 per person. There is also instructed line dancing from 12:05 to 2 p.m. every Friday; the cost is $2 per person. All classes are held at The Palmer Center, located at 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO. Afternoon Dances
Afternoon dances are held at 1 p.m. every Wednesday at The Palmer Center. The Ed Smith Band provides music and dancers are allowed to bring commercially-prepared finger foods. The entry fee is $3. Learn to Belly Dance
Belly dancing is an enlivening dance that helps tone the body through a low-impact workout. Adults 50+ are invited to join friends at 2 p.m. on Thursdays for this fun class, held at the Truman Memorial Building, 416 W. Maple in Independence, MO. Pickleball
Adults 50+ are invited to play Intermediate Pickleball at The Palmer Center from 1 to 5:30 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday and from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. This exciting competitive game focuses on agility, shot placement and strategy, as opposed to power. Beginner play is offered from 12 to 1 p.m. each Thursday, so come try it – it’s free for all. Bare Bones Art
Are you creative, have an art project or idea you would like to share? At 12:30 p.m. each Monday you can gather with other artists – bring your own project, create together and help each other. Crochet 101

Pinochle
Adults 50+ are invited to play Pinochle at 12:30 p.m. on Mondays at The Palmer Center, 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO. Call 325-6200 for more information.

Game Time!
Adults 50+ are invited to play a variety of games at 12:15 p.m. every day at The Palmer Center, 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO. Games consist of Hand in Foot Canasta, Card Golf and Mexican Dominoes. For more information call 325-6200.

Wood Carving Club*
Adults 50+ are invited to join in on the camaraderie and friendship of others as you try out your hand at wood carving from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. on Mondays and 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. on Wednesdays at the Sermon Center, 201 N. Dodgion. *Sermon Center membership required. For more information call 325-6200.

Monthly Grief Support Group
The Palmer Center and Crossroads Hospice are offering a monthly grief support group from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday each month at the Truman Memorial Building. Any type of loss will be discussed, whether its loss of a loved one, driving abilities, independence, etc., as well as myths associated with grief. The Truman Memorial Building is located at 416 W. Alzheimer’s Support Group
If you have someone in your life that has Alzheimer’s Disease, please join us for this monthly support group. Sponsored by Three Rivers Hospice the group will meet Friday, 10:00 a.m. on December 20th at The Palmer Center, 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO.

Centennial Birthday Party Package
Adults celebrating their 100th birthday are welcome to celebrate this milestone by having their special day at The Palmer Center, 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO. A complimentary room will be made available on Saturday afternoons, based on space availability. Proof of Independence residency is required. Call 325-6200 for more information.

Tagilima Crafts
Adults 50+ are welcome to join others for a time of crafts and socializing from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. every Thursday at The Palmer Center. The Palmer Center is located at 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO. For more information call 325-6200.

Vital Volunteer Program
The Palmer Center is currently accepting applications for volunteers who would like to teach a special skill to older adults or be a general program leader. Please call 325-6200 to request an application.

Palmer Center Fitness Center Memberships
Adults 50+ are invited to tour The Palmer Center Fitness Room and consider joining as a member for a nominal annual fee. The Fitness Room includes several cardiovascular and weight-training machines. Each new member will complete a fitness assessment and receive an orientation to the equipment. Call 325-6200 for more information about becoming a member.
