IPL Converting to LED Streetlighting
June 24, 2013

Residents of Independence will soon see the city in a whole new light. The City of Independence will be one of the first cities in the nation to initiate an ambitious full-scale street light change out. The project is expected to save nearly $450,000 per year in energy and maintenance costs, while at the same time, removing more than 10 million lbs. of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. The program is in keeping with the City’s goal of developing and supporting vibrant neighborhoods and a high quality of life, as well as helping to ensuring long-term financial stability of the city.

The City-owned utility, Independence Power and Light (IPL), has calculated that moving from High Intensity Discharge (HID) fixtures to the new Light Emiting Diode (LED) fixtures would save more than 5 million kilowatt hours, for an annual savings of nearly $300,000. Not only will it improve the quality of light by providing quality white light, lamp life is longer and requires less maintenance, resulting in an estimated $150,000 savings in maintenance costs each year.

A pilot program was completed around the Fairmount area, Stone Canyon subdivision and along a section of Little Blue Parkway last year. Citizens were informally surveyed and more than 75% gave a favorable rating for the new LED lights. Funds were used from American Reinvestment Recovery Act (ARRA) to help offset the cost of the lights.

“As Mayor, I have been committed to projects that improve the quality of life for the residents of Independence, which are environmentally and fiscally responsible, and enhance this great community,” said Mayor Reimal. “With these new LED street lights, we can improve visibility, making our residents feel safer. Not only are these lights more cost-effective, using 50% less energy, they are more sustainable, giving us the satisfaction that we have made a positive impact on our city and left another positive legacy.”

Installation of the new system is expected to be completed by December 2013.
