City of Independence announces changes in services, hours in response to regional COVID-19 case spike

City of Independence Mayor Eileen Weir today announced City facilities would be decreasing hours open to the public due to an increase in COVID-19 cases throughout the Kansas City Region. City Hall and the Police Department Headquarters will be open to the public on Mondays and Thursdays from 8 AM to 5 PM. Further, all City staff whom are able to work from home will be required to do so. These changes will be implemented on Monday, November 16.

“Over the last two weeks we have seen a troubling spike not only in cases in the region but also in our staff,” Mayor Eileen Weir said. “In the last two weeks, we have had more than 20 positive cases in City staff requiring more than 100 staff members to quarantine. We are not taking this situation lightly. To ensure we are able to provide the services our citizens depend on, we must take additional steps to protect the health of our staff and the health of the community we serve.”

In addition to the reduced hours, the City of Independence will use CARES Act funding to support technology services needed to increase the capacity for remote work and virtual meetings.

“Independence is committed to providing exceptional customer service,” Mayor Weir said. “We have increased our technical capabilities and understanding on how to meet the expectations of our community during these challenging times while putting the public health at the forefront. Citizens will still be able to pay their bills through the drive-thru at the Independence Utilities Center Monday through Friday from 8 AM-5PM, in the Utilities’ Center lobby on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 8 AM to 5 PM, and the drop-off box is available at City Hall every day as well.”
