The City of Independence On A Roll Committee provided an update to the City Council on Sept. 28 regarding ongoing projects and proposals. One of the top proposals identified in citizen surveys the committee is working on is the Square Streetscape Project. This project is estimated to cost approximately $3 million and current proposals would include new sidewalks, traffic flow changes, improved lighting and a cycle track through the Historic Independence Square area. Originally this proposal was scheduled to come before the Council this month but the committee has decided to take additional time for conversations and research.
“The Independence Square is an important part of our community,” 1st District Councilmember and On a Roll Committee Chair John Perkins said. “Citizens, visitors and businesses utilize this area throughout the year. The Square Streetscape Project is intended to provide needed infrastructure updates to meet the growing needs of this region. We are taking extra time before a final concept is brought before the Council to continue engagements with our stakeholders in the area while also answering questions from the citizens and reviewing funding options.”
Of the $3 million proposed for this project, approximately $1.4 million (46% of the total) will be leveraged from state and federal funding sources. The Committee is currently evaluating other grants and programs that may be utilized for projects of this type to decrease the fiscal impact to the City.
While the current concept has been created in collaboration with the Independence Square Association, this project impacts other organizations such as the Independence Economic Development Council, Chamber of Commerce, School District and several churches in the area. Ongoing discussions with key stakeholders will take place over the next several weeks and a proposal is anticipated to come to the Council later this year.
