The City of Independence today announced James Nail has been named General Manager of the Independence Power and Light Department. Nail has been serving as the Interim Assistant General Manager since January.
“Our Power and Light Department is in an important phase with many transitions and Jim has been an integral part of the planning and implementation that has taken place,” City Manager Zach Walker said. “Over the last year, we have reduced electric rates by 6 percent, updated and simplified our rate categories, contracted for purchased power and closed the Blue Valley Power Plant. Our electric utility is an important benefit we offer our citizens which is why we have taken our time to find the right person for the General Manager position. Jim has shown that we had the right person right here through his high level of integrity, strong leadership, and the trust he has earned from the department, his peers on our Leadership Team, and within our community. I am proud to make this promotion official today.”
Jim is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy. Prior to coming to the Independence Power and Light Department, Nail served in the United States Navy in active duty for 10 years and as a member of the Navy Reserves for 15 years as a nuclear submarine officer, retiring as a Commander. His most recent tour of duty was in Afghanistan from 2006-2007. He joined IPL as a Production Operations Superintendent in 2004 and has been the Reliability Compliance Coordinator within the department for the past 7 years.
Nail and his wife, Sandy, continue to serve the veteran community as active leaders in the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Auxiliary.
