City of Independence Fire Chief Doug Short released the following statement identifying Firefighter/Hazardous Material Technician David F. Jameson, Jr. as the firefighter who passed away yesterday.

“It is with great sadness that the Independence Fire Department must announce the Line of Duty Death of Firefighter/Hazardous Material Technician David F. Jameson, Jr. David has been with the City of Independence Fire Department for 23 years, serving the patrons of the city with great honor. David’s passing was a sudden and unexpected loss for the department and his family. David was a 52-year-old father of ten children and also leaves behind his mother, grandmother, two brothers and two sisters. He had served the majority of his career with Independence working out of Station 5, in the southwest area of the City. David’s history included many letters of commendation and heroism during his career.

The City of Independence and IAFF Local 781 would like to express our condolences to the family of David and will proudly honor his passing with the most fitting Fire Service traditions. He will be sadly missed by his brothers and sisters serving in the Fire Service. Details of services and memorial will be announced as soon as arrangements have been completed.”

Mayor Eileen Weir and City Manager Zach Walker added their condolences to Mr. Jameson’s family, the department and City.

“It is with a heavy heart that we mark the passing of one of our own during these already challenging times. We thank our citizens for the outpouring of support for the Independence Fire Department and know they are anxious to help mark the sacrifice of Firefighter Jameson and his commitment to our community for more than two decades. Every member of his family and the department that I have spoken with have only kind words to say of a man that loved to laugh, was dedicated to his career and cared deeply for his family. Saying goodbye suddenly is never easy but we know that we will work through this together.”
