City of Independence seeks comment on concepts for the Truman Connected Bicycling & Walking Path

The City of Independence, in coordination with the Mid-America Regional Council (MARC), invites you to attend a public open house for Truman Connected. The meeting will be Tuesday, October 22 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at City Hall in the Lower Level Conference Room, 111 E. Maple Avenue, in Independence.

The purpose of Truman Connected is to develop a concept for a pedestrian and bicycle path that will connect residents and visitors to neighborhoods, Independence Square, Truman Library, Englewood Arts District, Truman Sports Complex, and the Rock Island Trail.  Community feedback is important to developing the best possible route, so the City is seeking comments about optional concepts that link destinations you love and address barriers for reaching them by foot or bicycle, and more.

During the meeting, community members will be able to review detailed maps of improvement concepts and provide feedback. Representatives from the City and consultant team will be present to answer questions and discuss issues or concerns. No formal presentations will be given. Community members may stop by anytime during the meeting’s two-hour timeframe.

The planning process for Truman Connected began this spring and will continue through winter 2020. It will move the transportation recommendations of the City’s existing plans and policies, such as the US-24 Highway Corridor Study and 40 Highway Corridor and Focus Area Plan, forward. It will also provide detailed information that City staff, elected officials, and community members may use as they pursue funding for design and construction of recommended pedestrian, bicycle, transit, and vehicular improvements.
