The City of Independence is joining communities across the nation and around the world in recognizing World Elder Abuse Awareness Day the week of June 15, 2019.
On Monday, June 3, Mayor Eileen Weir read and signed a proclamation designating June 15, 2019, as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day in the City of Independence, signifying the City’s understanding of the need to raise awareness and help prevent elder abuse.
According to the Administration of Community Living, as many as 1 in 10 older Americans are abused or neglected each year, and only 1 in 14 cases of elder abuse or neglect ever comes to the attention of authorities.
The City of Independence will host three World Elder Abuse Awareness Day events the week of June 15:
