(INDEPENDENCE, Mo.) Friday, August 29, 2014 – The Jackson County Regional Animal Shelter in Independence, operated by Great Plains SPCA, is at maximum capacity for sheltering cats. In response, Jackson County has directed the Shelter not to take additional cats from unincorporated Jackson County unless they are injured or need to be held for observation in response to a bite complaint.
In cooperation with Jackson County, the City of Independence is implementing the same temporary restriction on acceptance of cats.
Effective immediately, Independence Animal Services will only pick up cats which have been injured, or need to be held for observation in response to a bite complaint. Residents who find an injured cat, or a cat which has injured a person, should call Animal Services Dispatch at (816) 325-7205.
Residents are encouraged to consider adopting a cat from the Regional Shelter and can contact Great Plains SPCA at (913) 831-7722.
