City Council Creates Advisory Commission on the Visual Arts
(INDEPENDENCE, Mo.) Tuesday, May 20, 2014 – At the Independence City Council meeting held Monday, May 19, 2014, the Council passed a resolution creating a Mayor’s Advisory Commission on the Visual Arts. The Commission will be charged to plan, promote and encourage public awareness of, accessibility to, participation in, and support for the artistic and cultural development of the City of Independence.
The seven-member Commission will forge partnerships with private and/or public organizations in and around Jackson County to promote and support the visual arts, and will serve as an advisory body and make recommendations to the Mayor.
“Independence has a vibrant arts community that is continuing to grow and thrive,” said Independence Mayor Eileen Weir. “Arts and culture add to the high quality of life in our city, and I am excited to form this commission so we can increase collaboration with other arts organizations and artists across the metropolitan area.”
The commission will contain at least four members with significant knowledge and experience in drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, design, photography, video, filmmaking, etc.; one member is to have significant knowledge and experience in applied arts such as industrial or graphic design, fashion or interior design; two members will come from the business and professional community. Five of the seven members will be required to be residents of or have their principal place of business in the City of Independence.
