(INDEPENDENCE, Mo.) Tuesday, January 14, 2014 – It’s never too early to start thinking spring...and your first 5K of the season! Dust off those running shoes and start training for the Independence Park Trot 5K Run/Walk.
The FREE 3rd annual, Independence Park Trot 5K Run/Walk is just four months away and is slated rain or shine for 8 a.m. Saturday, May 3 at the City’s Waterfall Park, located just south of Bass Pro Shops. Online registration for the event has already started at www.IndependenceParkTrot.com and will continue through April 20.
The Independence Health Department has teamed up with KC Running Company to hold the certified 5K event as part of the Building a Healthier Independence initiative.
"Every year we have been amazed at the turnout and success," Health Director Larry Jones said. "Our goal is to get Independence residents moving toward a healthier lifestyle. This is a perfect way to encourage physical activity while at the same time sharing our city’s beautiful parks."
"We heard a lot of good comments about the event after last year’s race, in spite of the cold and rain," BHI Project Coordinator Alicia Nelson said. More than 1,800 registered for the Park Trot in 2013, and although the weather didn’t cooperate, more than 1,100 were present for packet pick-up. Registrants came from nine states, including as far away as Maryland and Texas.
Awards will be given based on time completion of run for the following age groups: 14 and younger, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 54-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75 and older.
Children 10 and under are eligible to compete in a Kids’ Run, which will begin after the completion of the 5K Run/Walk. A parent or legal guardian must sign a waiver for anyone under age 18 participating in the race.
Interested residents may register online at www.independenceparktrot.com. Entrants can also purchase 5K Park Trot T-shirts for $10 for any size on the Park Trot website. The T-shirts will also be available in a limited supply on race day.
Packet pick-up will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 2 at Bass Pro Shops, 18001 Bass Pro Drive, and from 7 to 7:45 a.m. the day of the race near the start of the course.
