Community Health Assessment Surveys Mailed

Hoping to get an accurate pulse on the City of Independence’s current health needs, the Independence Health Department has launched another extensive community health assessment. The key part of the assessment is a survey mailed to more than 10,500 households across Independence.

Those contacted are being asked to spend about 15 minutes answering the survey questions on paper or on line. Residents who complete the survey can also enter in a drawing for one of six Kindles to be given away, valued at $89 each. The deadline for returning the survey is Friday, October 25.

“The survey is designed to tell us what is going on in the community so we can develop programs in response and evaluate ongoing programs,” Health Director Larry Jones said. “We hope this will continue to allow us to address the real needs of the community.”

Participants will be asked questions about health-related topics such as diet/nutrition, exercise, tobacco use, alcohol consumption, etc., as well as their opinions about the most pressing public health issues facing Independence.

Once survey data is compiled, the Health Department will compare data from the 2011 survey with the current survey data to determine if health behaviors have changed. Major findings will also be shared with health and service organizations in Independence and incorporated into the 2013-2018 Community Health Improvement Plan, which provides guidance on strategies to ensure measurable health improvement in Independence. It also will help the Health Department track outcome data related to its current grants and health programs.

“We encourage all residents that receive a survey to participate in the survey,” Jones stressed. “And we are extremely appreciative of their cooperation and input.”
