(Independence, Mo.) – Independence Police are looking for a person of interest involving a man posing as a contract employee of the Independence Water Department, gaining entry into two different homes and stealing money and credit cards. In a third incident the homeowner refused to let the suspect in. In each case, the suspect told the victim that he needed to check the plumbing inside their house. Similar incidents have been reported in Raytown, MO, and Overland Park, KS.
The suspect is described as a white male, slender build, approximately 6’ tall, around 50 years of age and possibly missing front teeth. In two of the incidents he wore a ball cap and told one of the victims his name was Roy. The victims in each case were elderly. A possible vehicle description has been given as a dark green/teal 2000s model Ford Taurus. The time of day for the incidents ranged between 2 to 4:30 p.m.
The Independence Water Department does not have workers enter homes to work on plumbing unless they are requested to do so and an appointment is made. All employees carry City identification. If you are approached by anyone representing themselves as a utility worker who requests access inside your home, do not let them in. Lock the door and call 911.
If you have any information regarding the scam suspect or know anything about the above incidents, please call the TIPS Hotline at (816) 474-8477 or the Independence Police Department at (816) 836-3600.
