Health Department Awarded Healthy Lifestyles Grant
June 13, 2014
(INDEPENDENCE, Mo.) Friday, June 13, 2014 – The City of Independence Health Department was recently awarded $46,136 in grant funding to provide support and lessen barriers which impede access to safe spaces to be physically active in the northwest area of Independence. The City is one of only 20 organizations to receive part of $2,240,000 in Healthy Lifestyles grants awarded by the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City (HCF).
“We are delighted to receive this funding to provide greater opportunities for physical activity among residents of northwest Independence,” said Larry D. Jones, MPH, Director of the City of Independence Health Department.
These grants support community partnerships which aim to increase access to healthy food, safe places to be physically active and reduce exposure to tobacco among the uninsured and underserved.
“Many low-income communities have limited or no access to affordable, healthy food, a lack of safer environments to be physically active and face an overabundance of tobacco products and advertising,” Bridget McCandless, M.D., President/CEO of HCF said. “Reversing this trend requires communities to change environments through policies, practices and institutional and organizational changes. We are proud to fund these programs that are working to create community environments that make the healthy choice, the easy choice.”
HCF released its Healthy Lifestyles Requests for Proposals (RFP) in November 2013. The Foundation received a total of 61 proposals totaling approximately $8.9 million in requests.
The Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City provides leadership, advocacy and resources that eliminate barriers to quality health for the uninsured and underserved in Kansas City, Missouri, Cass, Jackson and Lafayette counties in Missouri and Allen, Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas. Since it began grantmaking in 2005, HCF has awarded more than $185 million to agencies addressing health needs in the community.
