2014 New Year’s Party
Come join the fun with this New Year’s Party at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 2, 2014 at The Palmer Center, 218A N. Pleasant Street. Please bring store-bought unopened snacks to contribute to the party snack table.
SilverSneakers® Fitness Program
The Palmer Center is proud to begin providing SilverSneakers® – the nation’s largest older adult fitness program – available through select Medicare health plans. To find participating plans, go to www.silversneakers.com; call Silver Sneakers at 1-888-423-4632; or stop by The Palmer Center front desk. We will host an open house to register new members from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday, January 2 and Friday, January 3 at the Truman Memorial Building, 416 W. Maple Ave., Independence, MO. Galvin’s & Terribles Day Trip
On Tuesday, March 11, adults 50+ are off to St. Joseph on this day trip – starting with the delicious family-style lunch (included) at Galvin’s Dinner House where the main entrée will be free-range organic Amish-raised pan-fried chicken. A wonderful guided overview of historical downtown follows, and then it’s off to Terrible’s Frontier Casino. Deadline to pre-register is Thursday, February 20. Trip times are 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11. You may pre-register for this trip starting Tuesday, January 7. Price for registration is $49.
Powell Gardens & Cockrell Day Trip
Adults 50+ can enjoy a lovely spring day at Powell Gardens and experience 970 acres of botanical bliss. The trip will include a narrated trolley ride and a light lunch at Café Thyme. Afterwards there will be plenty of time to explore the gift shop, terrace gardens and the Heartland Harvest Garden. On the drive home, we will stop at Cockrell Mercantile, Kansas City’s unique shopping experience. This fun trip will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, April 11. Deadline to pre-register will be Friday, March 21. Price of registration is $49.
Miracle on South Division Street at the New Theatre Restaurant
Adults 50+ will laugh at this new comedy starring Connie Stevens and her real life daughter, Tricia Leigh Fisher. The show surrounds Clara (Connie Stevens) and her grown kids who know they are special, ever since the miraculous night in 1942 when the Blessed Mother appeared to Grandpa. A deathbed confession reveals a family secret, and then all heck breaks loose on South Division Street. A great lunch is included. The trip will depart at 10:45 a.m. on Wednesday, April 23. Deadline to register is Wednesday, April 2. Price for registration is $51.
Annual Pickleball Tournament
The tournament is scheduled for 8 a.m. on Saturday, February 22. You must have a playing partner and may register for Men’s doubles, Women’s doubles and/or Mixed doubles. Each player will receive a tee-shirt. Registration deadline is Saturday, February 8 and cost is $12-$15 per person. For more information call The Palmer Center at 325-6200.
White Elephant Bingo

The Palmer Center will host 5-A-Day Bingo at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, January 7. Fruits and vegetables are contributed by Hy-Vee on 23rd Street to use as prizes during this nutrition-education bingo game. Intermediate Senior Tap Dance
Have you always loved watching a tap dancer? Listen as your feet rhythmically strike the floor to the tunes in this intermediate tap dance class and experience a whole new way to have fun! Please bring your own tap shoes. The next Intermediate Senior Tap Dance class will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesdays, January 8, 15, 22 and 29. The fee is $20 per four-week session; pre-registration is three days prior to the start of the session. Call 325-6200 to register at least three days in advance or if you have any questions. The Palmer Center is co-sponsoring with Kapke & Willerth LLC, Wealth Management Group, and NorthCare Hospice & Palliative Care to bring to adults 50+ a presentation about what is a DNR; what is a living will; what does your family need to know about your wishes; and how a social worker or Hospice care can help you. This presentation will be from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 7. Breakfast rolls and coffee will be served. The Palmer Center is located at 218A N. Balance For Life
A new educational series is being presented by Occupational and Physical Therapists from Rehab Choice at The Groves at the Palmer Center at 10:45 a.m. on Wednesday, January 15. The topic will be energy conservation, joint protection, and ergonomics – what it is and how can it make life better. The Palmer Center is located at 218A N. The Palmer Center is co-sponsoring with Comprehensive Mental Health a new presentation on a common problem among older adults – depression. If you feel tired, helpless, hopeless, and sad most of the time – you may have depression. If you are having trouble working, sleeping, eating, and functioning – you may have depression. Blood Pressure and Blood Sugar Checks
Adults 50+ may have their blood pressure and blood sugar checked from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 21 by the Visiting Nurses Association. From 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 8, blood pressure only will be checked by Dr. John Chapman. The Palmer Center is located at 218A N. Cover to Cover
The Palmer Center’s book club “Cover to Cover” will meet at 2 p.m. on Thursday, January 16 at the Truman Memorial Building. January’s book is “Unbroken” by Laura Hilderbrand. Alzheimer’s Support Group
If someone in your life has Alzheimer’s Disease, please join us for this monthly support group. Sponsored by Three Rivers Hospice, the group will meet at 10 a.m. on Fridays, January 10 and February 7 at The Palmer Center, 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO.
Centennial Birthday Party Package
Adults celebrating their 100th birthday are welcome to celebrate this milestone by having their special day at The Palmer Center, 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO. Palmer Center Fitness Center Memberships
Adults 50+ are invited to tour The Palmer Center Fitness Room and consider joining as a member for a nominal annual fee. The Fitness Room includes several cardiovascular and weight-training machines.
