C.E.R.T. Classes Starting July 19, 2013
June 24, 2013
The Independence Fire Department’s Emergency Preparedness Division is offering a four-day 24-hour Emergency Preparedness class, Community Emergency Response Training (CERT), to citizens living in Independence and surrounding Eastern Jackson County.
The class will be from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays, July 19 and 26 and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays, July 20 and 27 in the lower level training room of Fire Station #1, 950 N. Spring St. The class fee is $25. This includes the class, the CERT manual and class materials needed for the training.
Through CERT training, citizens learn basic emergency response skills so they can aid themselves, family, friends and others without placing themselves in unnecessary danger. Whether the emergency is as small as a power outage or as large as a tornado or terrorist event, advance preparation can minimize damage. Lives can be saved when people are trained and know what to do in emergency situations.
The CERT Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their lives and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, disaster medical and team organization. Using the training learned in the classroom and exercises, CERT-trained members can assist others in their family, neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help.
CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness volunteer projects in their community.
Previous EJC CERT students may register as “refresher” at no additional charge; bring your CERT workbook. If you have missed or will miss a subject unit or a class you will be able to make it up at a future EJC course. An abbreviated pre-class orientation or refresher version is also offered by FEMA on line as FEMA IS-317: http://www.citizencorps.gov/cert/training_mat.shtm.
