May Activities and Programs at The Palmer Center

The Palmer Center at 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO is operated by the City of Independence and is dedicated to the mission of improving the overall health of 50+ adults. Step Back in Time – Jamesport Tour
Adults 50+ are invited to join Independence Parks and Recreation on a day tour to Jamesport, MO to see a world where the Amish still live everyday life as if time literally stopped 100 years ago. An "Amish Insider" referred to in Missouri Life Magazine will take the group to explore an Amish home, stables and farm; visit Amish country stores; enjoy a hearty Mennonite meal; and shop the town’s many antique and gift shops. The tour is scheduled for Friday, June 14 and the cost is $53. It includes luxury motor coach transportation, driver’s gratuity, lunch, all activities listed and an experienced tour guide. Columbia Star Sunday Brunch Train Tour
Adults 50+ are invited to join Independence Parks and Recreation on a day tour to Columbia, MO. The group will take a motor coach to Columbia to board the Columbia Star train. The group will recapture the romance and grandeur of a bygone era of train travel in beautifully-appointed Pullman railroad cars while watching the Missouri landscape roll by. An elegant brunch will be served on board by a talented chef within a fine dining setting. After the trip is complete, the group will visit the University of Missouri Botanic Garden to see their thematic and special collection gardens. The tour is scheduled for Sunday, June 23 and the cost is $99. It includes luxury motor coach transportation, driver’s gratuity, brunch, all activities listed and an experienced tour guide. Buddy Holly at The New Theatre Restaurant
Adults 50+ are invited to join the Independence Parks and Recreation on a day tour to The New Theatre Restaurant in Overland Park, KS to see Buddy Holly, which tells the story of Buddy Holly’s short yet explosive career and features his classic songs "Peggy Sue," "That’ll Be the Day," "Maybe Baby," and more. The tour is scheduled for Wednesday, June 26 and the cost is $51. It includes luxury motor coach transportation, driver’s gratuity, lunch, theatre tickets and an experienced tour guide. Miss Abigail’s Guide to Dating, Mating and Marriage – American Heartland Theatre Day Tour
Independence Parks & Recreation is hosting a day tour on Wednesday, May 29 to the Crown Center and American Heartland Theatre to see "Miss Abigail’s Guide to Dating, Mating and Marriage." The bus will leave The Palmer Center promptly at 10 a.m., with time allotted for lunch (on your own) and shopping. The fee is $41 and includes the show ticket, luxury motorcoach transportation, driver gratuity and a professional tour guide. Pre-registration along with payment is due by Tuesday, May 7.

Palmer Center Advisory Council
The Palmer Center is accepting applications for Advisory Council members to fill two vacancies. Members must be a resident of Independence, have a strong interest in senior center and parks and recreation programs for older adults, and be able to commit to attendance at a meeting each month. Monthly Activities

5-A-Day Bingo
The Palmer Center will host 5-A-Day Bingo at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, May 7. Fruits and vegetables are contributed by HyVee on 23rd Street to use as prizes during this nutrition-education bingo game. The Palmer Center is located at 218A North Pleasant St. in Independence, MO. This program is free and no pre-registration is required. Questions may be directed to 325-6200.

Cell Phone Solutions
Adults 50+ may bring their cell phone and instruction booklet for assistance on operating the functions at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 7. This program is co-sponsored with Catholic Charities of Kansas City-St. Joseph and will be held at The Palmer Center, 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO. Questions may be directed to 325-6200.

Facebook Class
Learn how to use Facebook – one of the most popular social media tools you can use today! Adults 50+ may register at 325-6200 for the next class, starting at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 7. Participants will need to bring a current user name/password for an email account. This class will be held at The Palmer Center, 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO.

50+ Creative Art Show
Adults 50+ are invited to submit their creative art or handiwork to display at The Palmer Center for a Creative Art Show between May 20-24. Anyone is welcome to visit the Center to view and admire the work created by older adults in the community. Creative submissions, including paintings, wood carvings, crocheted items, quilts, drawings, etc. will be accepted to display during the art show. All material must be in good taste and submitted no later than Monday, May 13, along with your name and contact information. Solicitation of work will not be permitted and the show is for display purposes only. Additional questions may be directed to 325-6200.

Intermediate Senior Tap Dance
Have you always loved watching a tap dancer? Listen as your feet rhythmically strike the floor to the tunes in this intermediate tap dance class and experience a whole new way to have fun! Please bring your own tap shoes. The next Intermediate Senior Tap Dance class will start on Wednesday, May 1. The class will meet for four weeks at 11 a.m. Pre-registration is required; the fee is $20. Call 325-6200 to register at least three days in advance. Diabetic Foot Screening
St. Mary’s Hospital will provide adults 50+ free diabetic foot screening, blood sugar and blood pressure checks from 10 to 11:15 a.m. Wednesday, May 1. For more information call 325-6200. The Palmer Center is located at 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO.

Skillbuilders
Widows, widowers and caregivers – enjoy a Danish and coffee while learning about weekly topics presented by informative speakers including home security and personal safety, managing your money, making simple home repairs and more. It will be held from 9:45 a.m. – 11:50 a.m. on Tuesdays until May 21 at The Palmer Center, 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence. A celebration party will take place on the last day of the session. Health Education and You
Adults 50+ are invited to a free Health Presentation at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 9 at The Palmer Center. This month’s topic is "Vertigo." The program is co-sponsored with Heritage Physician’s Group. Red Hat Pokeno
Red Hat Chapter members are welcome to play Pokeno at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 9 at The Palmer Center. The Palmer Center is located at 218A N. Pleasant Street in Independence. For more information call 325-6200.

Cover to Cover
The Palmer Center’s book club "Cover to Cover" will meet at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 16 at the Truman Memorial Building. May’s book is "The Kiterunner" by Khaled Hosseini. Bare Bones Art
Are you creative and have an art project or idea you would like to share? At 12:30 p.m. each Monday you can gather with other artists – bring your own project, create together and help each other. Crochet 101
Learn some basic crochet stitches or pursue a new hobby with new friends at 10:15 a.m. each Friday. No pre-registration is required. The cost is $1 per class. Call 325-6200 for more information. The Palmer Center is located at 218A N. Pleasant Street in Independence.

Pinochle
Adults 50+ are invited to play Pinochle at 12:30 p.m. on Mondays at The Palmer Center, 218A N. Pleasant St. For more information call 325-6200.

Game Time!
Adults 50+ are invited to play a variety of games at 12:15 p.m. every day at The Palmer Center, 218A N. Pleasant St. Games consist of Hand in Foot Canasta, Card Golf and Mexican Dominoes. For more information call 325-6200.

Caring Communities Resource Center
Adults 50+ are welcome to drop by to discuss any issues or questions they might have about remaining independent or the care giving role. A case manager will be available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. the first and third Tuesday of each month at The Palmer Center. Monthly Grief Support Group
The Palmer Center and Crossroads Hospice are offering a monthly grief support group the first and third Wednesday each month at the Truman Memorial Building. Any type of loss will be discussed, whether its loss of a loved one, driving abilities, independence, etc., as well as myths associated with grief. The Truman Memorial Building is located at 416 W. Centennial Birthday Party Package
Adults celebrating their 100th birthday are welcome to celebrate this milestone by having their special day at The Palmer Center, 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence. A complimentary room will be made available on Saturday afternoons, based on space availability. Proof of Independence residency is required. Call 325-6200 for more information.

Tagilima Crafts
Adults 50+ are welcome to join others for a time of crafts and socializing from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. every Thursday at The Palmer Center. The Palmer Center is located at 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO. For more information call 325-6200.

Vital Volunteer Program
The Palmer Center is currently accepting applications for volunteers who would like to teach a special skill to older adults or be a general program leader. Please call 325-6200 to request an application.

Lowery’s Music Magic Classes
Adults 50+ are invited to learn to play the organ at The Palmer Center, 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO. Three different levels of classes are offered for 10 week sessions on Tuesdays. Call 325-6200 for more information on class start dates and pricing.

Palmer Center Fitness Center Memberships
Adults 50+ are invited to tour The Palmer Center Fitness Room and consider joining as a member for a nominal annual fee. The Fitness Room includes several cardiovascular and weight training machines. Each new member will complete a fitness assessment and receive an orientation to the equipment. Call 325-6200 for more information about becoming a member.
