Park Trot 5K Run/Walk Scheduled for Saturday, May 4
March 14, 2013
Join a thousand people who have already registered for the second annual Independence Park Trot 5K Run/Walk!
The number of online pre-registrations at www.independenceparktrot.com hit 1,000 this week for the free Park Trot 5K. The race is slated to start at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 4 (rain or shine) at the City’s Waterfall Park, located just south of Bass Pro Shops.
Packet pick-up and in-person registration will be available the afternoon of Friday, May 3 at Bass Pro Shops, 18001 Bass Pro Drive, and from 7 - 7:45 a.m. near the start of the course on Saturday, May 4. There is no limit on the number of participants.
The Independence Health Department teamed up last year with KC Running Company to hold the certified 5K event as part of the Building a Healthier Independence (BHI) initiative. BHI Project Coordinator Christina Heinen said the turnout of more than 750 chip-timed participants at last year’s race was a leading factor in the decision to bring back the event.
The BHI grant covers registration, but the Health Department is seeking sponsors for this year’s event to cover other costs associated with the race. Current sponsors include Bass Pro, Independence Parks and Recreation Department, the Independence Examiner, Nature’s Pantry Market, GEHA, Centerpoint Medical Center, Stand Up! Blue Springs, Cosentino's, Balanced You Studio, and Hy-Vee.
Health Director Larry Jones said. "Our goal is to get Independence residents moving toward a healthier lifestyle. This is a perfect way to encourage physical activity while at the same time sharing our city’s beautiful parks."
A parent or legal guardian must sign a waiver for anyone under age 18 participating in the race. T-shirts will be available for purchase for $4.50 each for children and regular adult sizes on the race website www.independenceparktrot.com. For more information contact Heinen at (816) 325-7996.
