City of Independence Recognized as a Healthy Employer
February 13, 2013
The City of Independence is being recognized as one of Kansas City’s Healthiest Employers by the Kansas City Business Journal. Each 2013 honoree is recognized for its commitment to creating a healthy workplace. Profiles including some of their wellness strategies and philosophies will run in a supplement with the March 8 print edition of the Business Journal.
This year’s program honors 20 area companies and organizations which do more than give lip service to wellness, prevention and overall employee health. These organizations can demonstrate tangible improvements in the health of both their employees and their bottom lines. They will be honored Thursday, March 7 at a luncheon to be held at the Sheraton Overland Park.
The City of Independence will be recognized in the 1,000 to 3,499 employee category. Others in the same category are Faith Technologies Inc., JE Dunn Construction, MRI Global and North Kansas City Hospital. Independence is being honored because of its Wellness Committee, Lunch and Learn Program, Biggest Loser Contest and its weekly e-mail to employees, Healthy Habits.
The Kansas City Business Journal asked wellness directors and human resources generalists to answer a variety of questions about their wellness programs through an online survey. Healthiest Employers, a data and research company, measured wellness programming in six key categories: culture and leadership commitment, foundational components, strategic planning, communication and marketing, programming and interventions, and reporting and analysis. The categories, proprietary scoring and benchmarking were formed with the help of the academic, medical, wellness and business communities from throughout the United States.
Answers were scored with a point value and ranked based on individual answers. Employers competed in four categories based on the size of their work force, so businesses competed against like-sized organizations. The Kansas City Business Journal selected companies with the highest point value from each category to be recognized for wellness excellence.
