Palmer Center Activities for February

The Palmer Center at 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO is operated by the City of Independence and is dedicated to the mission of improving the overall health of 50+ adults. AARP Tax Preparation Assistance
The Palmer Center is taking appointments for 60+ adults with an income of $50,000 or less to meet with a trained AARP volunteer to prepare their income tax forms. The appointments are being made for the period of February 5 – April 11, starting at 9 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. This program takes place at The Palmer Center, 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO. Call 325-6200 to make an appointment.

5-A-Day Bingo
The Palmer Center will host 5-A-Day Bingo at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, February 5. Fruits and vegetables are contributed by HyVee on 23rd Street to use as prizes during this nutrition-education bingo game. The Palmer Center is located at 218A North Pleasant St. in Independence, MO. This program is free and no pre-registration is required. Questions may be directed to 325-6200.

Intermediate Senior Tap Dance
Have you always loved watching a tap dancer? Listen as your feet rhythmically strike the floor to the tunes in this intermediate tap dance class and experience a whole new way to have fun! Please bring your own tap shoes. The next Intermediate Senior Tap Dance class will start on Wednesday, February 6. The class will meet for four weeks at 11 a.m. Pre-registration is required; the fee is $20. Call 325-6200 to register at least three days in advance. Chronic Disease Management
The Palmer Center is hosting a Chronic Disease Management session from 9 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. starting on February 12. It will meet on Tuesdays for six weeks. This program teaches skills to manage common problems from on-going health conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, lung disease, heart disease and many more. The program is co-sponsored with Catholic Charities of Kansas City-St. Joseph and will be held at The Palmer Center, 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence. Diabetic Foot Screening
St. Mary’s Hospital will provide adults 50+ free diabetic foot screening, blood sugar and blood pressure checks from 10 to 11:15 a.m. Wednesday, February 6. For more information call 325-6200. The Palmer Center is located at 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO.

Memoir Writing Club
The Palmer Center invites 50+ adults to a six-week writing program beginning on Thursday, February 14 and will meet until March 21 at 1 p.m. at The Palmer Center, 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence. Writing a personal memoir can be a great way to share your story and create a family heirloom for future generations. This program is co-sponsored with the Midwest Genealogy Library and does not require pre-registration. Questions may be directed to 325-6200.

Blood Pressure Checks
Adults 50+ are invited to The Palmer Center for free blood pressure checks by Dr. Chapman from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 13. The Visiting Nurses Association will provide free blood pressure checks from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 19. The Palmer Center is located at 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO. Valentine’s Day Party
The Palmer Center is hosting a Valentine’s Day party at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 14 followed by the romantic Cupid’s Corner luncheon at 11:15 a.m. Space is limited for Cupid’s Corner, and reservations are required. This event will be held in conjunction with the daily lunch program. Call for more information, 325-6200. The Palmer Center is located at 218A N. Pleasant Street, Independence.

Red Hat Pokeno
Red Hat Society members of any Independence Chapter are invited to play Pokeno at The Palmer Center at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 14. The Palmer Center is located at 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence.

Spring Mystery Tour
The Palmer Center is partnering with Sugar Creek Parks and Recreation to host a Spring Mystery Tour Wednesday and Thursday, March 20-22. Adults 50+ are invited to travel to destinations unknown – featuring unique entertainment, delicious dining experiences and surprising twists and turns. This tour includes luxury motorcoach transportation, luggage handling, hotel accommodations, admission to attractions, seven meals, driver’s gratuity and professional tour guides. The deadline to register is Friday, February 15. Call 325-6200 for fee information.

S’mores & More
Adults 50+ are invited to dress warmly and create S’mores with friends at the George Owens Nature Park, 1601 S. Speck, Independence. This event will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 20. No pre-registration is required. Questions may be directed to 325-6200.

Health Education and You
Adults 50+ are invited to a free Health Awareness Presentation at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 21st at The Palmer Center. This month’s topic is "Epilepsy." The program is sponsored by Independence Parks and Recreation and Heritage Physician’s Group. The Palmer Center is located at 218A N. Pleasant Street in Independence. Cover to Cover
The Palmer Center’s book club "Cover to Cover" will meet at 2 p.m. on Thursday, February 21 at the Truman Memorial Building. February’s book is "Whispers and Lies" by Joy Fielding. Copies are being made available at the North Independence Mid-Continent Public Library. Please call 325-6200 for more information. The Truman Memorial Building is located at 416 W. The Write Place Poetry Society
Writers 50+ are invited to read their individual poetry writings or reflect upon the work of others during the next Write Place Poetry Society meeting at 1 p.m. on Thursday, February 21. It will be held at The Palmer Center, 218A N. Pleasant Street in Independence. Questions may be directed to 325-6200.

A Look at Louisburg Day Tour
The Palmer Center is hosting a day tour to Louisburg, Kansas on Saturday, March 16. Visits will be made to the Cedar Cover Feline Sanctuary, devoted to the care and preservation of endangered large cats; the Middle Creek Winery; the Louisburg Cider Mill featuring their renowned country store; dinner at the Rutlader Outpost; and a little bit of Branson at the Middle Creek Opry. Pre-registration and fee of $61 is due by Saturday, February 23. Call 325-6200 to register.

Diabetes Workshop Part II
Adults 50+ are invited to attend the second part of a Diabetes Workshop at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, February 27 at The Palmer Center. Learn to manage diabetes by making smart food choices and being physically active. Instructed by Maria Boudreaux, licensed dietitian with the Mid-America Regional Council. White Elephant Bingo
