Following today’s new recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Mayor Eileen Weir announced increasing restrictions on gatherings of individuals. The CDC now recommends that for the next 8 weeks, organizers (whether groups or individuals) cancel or postpone in-person events that consist of 50 people or more throughout the United States.
“Following a conversation this evening with Governor Parson, mayors across the state are making a joint announcement for the protection of Missouri citizens discouraging the gathering of groups with 50 people or more for approximately 8 weeks,” Mayor Eileen Weir said. “This is not a decision we take lightly and know that it will greatly impact the daily lives of many of our citizens, visitors and the many people who work within Independence. We encourage you to follow the social isolation standards proposed by the CDC and look for regular updates as information on this event is changing by the minute.”
This recommendation does not apply to the day to day operation of organizations such as schools, institutes of higher learning, or businesses. Further decisions regarding closure of private businesses has not been decided at this time.
“We have made the difficult decision to cancel or postpone all events, classes, programs and rentals at our Parks, Recreation and Tourism facilities as well as closing these facilities to the public during this period,” Mayor Weir said. “We are looking at ways that we can provide education, craft and exercise opportunities to our residents in other ways during this period.”
