City of Independence, Missouri

Independence will be doing business license sweep beginning April 1

The City of Independence Community Development Department Regulated Industries Division will begin a sweep of businesses operating without a license on April 1. There are approximately 9,000 business within the City, and roughly 10 percent are delinquent or out of compliance.

“The City of Independence has found unprecedented success with our Corridor Code Enforcement efforts in which dozens of businesses and property owners have voluntarily complied,” Mayor Eileen Weir said. “We believe this business license sweep will be no different and look forward to creating a positive business environment in our community where everyone knows they are on the same page, held to the same standards. This continues our goals from Independence for All to improve customer service and optimize resources while controlling long-term costs.”

Staff will be hand delivering printed notices to delinquent license holders. These businesses will have 48 hours to come into compliance. If the business does not come into compliance, the business will be closed until compliance is met.
