INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – The City of Independence is taking steps to better patrol City parks through the winter months. Many local parks have access gates which are locked at night. While this deters vehicles from entering the public areas, it does not stop pedestrians. In an effort to better allow police officers access to all parks after dark, gates will be left unlocked. This will allow patrol cars easier access to ensure the areas are safe and respond to concerns from neighbors and patrons more efficiently.
“Our parks are the heart of many areas of our neighborhoods and we believe this change in protocol will allow us to better serve our community,” Independence Parks, Recreation and Tourism Director Eric Urfer said. “We depend on citizens to be our eyes and ears, alerting us of problems and concerns. We are thinking outside of the box, and hope citizens will continue to help us protect our parks and facilities.”
Winter park hours throughout the City are 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. unless citizens have reserved facilities. To see a full list of parks and facilities, visit indep.us/parksfacilities.
